Nah don't worry about that. I was just amazed someone could say round eyes on a snake from that picture. Looked like slightly out of focus raisins to me.
I've tried to take pictures of snakes before for this thread. I ain't getting close enough to get a good shot.

So there are quite a few differences between that very young cottonmouth you posted and the northern water snake in the pic.
The juvenile cottonmouth has incomplete bands with small dots in the bands (this pattern with the dots is pathognomonic for juvenile cottonmouth). Additionally, the snake is very small with a much darker head than you would see in a northern water snake.
There is also a notably larger head to neck ratio with the snake at rest (this rule doesn't apply as well to a pissed off water snake as they flatten out their head when threatened to mimic cottonmouths).
The northern water snake has vertical lines on the jaw, and complete bands in the neck area (these complete bands are how I usually tell the difference between northern water snakes and blotched water snakes.)

Bullsnake or gopher snake?
The easiest way I can describe it would be to look for a snake that looks like a western diamondback rattlesnake without the rattle and banding around the tail.GhostWipe15 said:

My dog alerted me to this juvenile just inside the fence. Had two rattles and a button.
