Nah don't worry about that. I was just amazed someone could say round eyes on a snake from that picture. Looked like slightly out of focus raisins to me.

I've tried to take pictures of snakes before for this thread. I ain't getting close enough to get a good shot.

I found it pretty amazing that somebody could see the eyes well enough to say "round pupils" in those pics. Hell, from what I can see in the pics you can barely even distinguish the eyes and IMHO, it's really difficult to tell from those pics whether or not it's got the "mascara" or it's a reflection from the water. Similarly, I can't tell at all from the pic if those are vertical lines on the jaw or reflections/ripples on the water.

And the coloration in the pics looks like it could be a juvi cottonmouth. If I saw the snake in person I have zero doubt I could give a 100% ID but those pics make me feel like I'm looking at an 8mm video of Sasquatch from 100 yards away.

Usually the ID is pretty damn easy IMHO- this is an old pic of a cottonmouth who decided that I was worth investigating while kayak fishing the Lower Colorado some years ago.

And here's a juvi cottonmouth that IMHO looks a lot like those pics:

So there are quite a few differences between that very young cottonmouth you posted and the northern water snake in the pic.

The juvenile cottonmouth has incomplete bands with small dots in the bands (this pattern with the dots is pathognomonic for juvenile cottonmouth). Additionally, the snake is very small with a much darker head than you would see in a northern water snake.

There is also a notably larger head to neck ratio with the snake at rest (this rule doesn't apply as well to a pissed off water snake as they flatten out their head when threatened to mimic cottonmouths).

The northern water snake has vertical lines on the jaw, and complete bands in the neck area (these complete bands are how I usually tell the difference between northern water snakes and blotched water snakes.)

The sharp angular Viper corners on the head around the eyes and snout are a dead giveaway Of a pit viper.

And speaking of pit vipers, I filmed and photographed a little copperhead stalk and eat a cicada on my front walk last night. It was pretty interesting.

It took a while for the venom to subdue the cicada.

Also found one curled up in my landscape brick right next to where I work out under my carport. I had been right by that spot several times without noticing it.

Also left my chicken house door open until about 10:30 last night and ended up having to toss out a 3' and a 4' rat snake trying to hide in the shavings. It was a snakey couple of days.

I'm aware of the differences. My point was that the pics are so grainy the ID would be suspect.

While I agree the eye is not defined well enough to use for ID purposes, all of the things I mentioned above are easily visible in the photos and they are good enough photos for identification confirmation.

Was swimming with my wife and kids yesterday at a neighborhood pool and looked over and there was a bird sitting on the concrete. Few seconds later I see a small 2 foot plain belly water snake strike at the bird and miss. I was about 30 feet away and that was just long enough for the snake to get out of reach. Good size and color for kids to look at without being too scared. Getting slow in my old age

Found this little guy caught between a nail and board in our storage shed at the deer lease. Was about 4-5" long.

ID?

Normally I'd say high as your hat must be a rat, but this one doesn't look like a rat snake. Looks more like a DBWS maybe?
Badace52

Right about not a rat, but it isn't a DBWS. I've never seen one of these in a tree before.

The easiest way I can describe it would be to look for a snake that looks like a western diamondback rattlesnake without the rattle and banding around the tail.

Dunno. He didn't estimate length, but it does seem like a large bull snake. Probably close to 6ft.

Not a snake, but the first Cicada Killer I've seen in a long time. He had a Cicada dragging it up the truck of a Pecan tree in our yard. Went straight into my boys' tree house. Doubt they ever go in again. Big Sandy Tx.
