Met this guy yesterday while fishing at one of our tanks. He thought one of our topwaters was a frog and swam out to strike at it. Sorry for photo quality, he blends in w the moss background.

Pattern mostly. Diamondback water snakes have black strips that are thinner and more vertical whereas the darker parts of blotched water snakes are more rectangular, also they have a very particular pattern of blotched on the back with offset patches on the sides. Also diamondback water snakes have their eyes positioned higher up on their head and closer together.

Question - why'd they change the Elaphe genus to Pantherophis? Didn't realize they had changed it.

It's a common king snake. Good ones to have around because they eat rattle snakes.

Let me apply some knowledge from this thread:

Light colored snake is a juvenile water moccasin. The fat body, 'Hershey's kiss' pattern on the sides of the snake and the dark streak around the eye are indicators.

EDIT: my uneducated (this thread is all I know) guess is moccasin because the tail goes from fat to skinny.

I didn't take the photos, so regarding the snake in the first photo I don't know how large it was as far as age and coloration.

It may not be real obvious, but in the bottom photo the king snake has started to swallow the copperhead.

Little scary this morning ... my 5 & 3 year old boys were helping me pick up sticks in our backyard. I bent down to swipe up a small group of leaves and my hand came within 6"-12" of this little copperhead. Luckily I was between the snake and my boys, but dang, close call.
