Never posted here but love checking everything out. I'm in Houston and they started clearing a lot behind my office so I was checking it out and found this guy. Left him be so he could get some sun but curious what type?

Hard to see the schnoz but looks like an Eastern Hognose to me.

I don't see the rattles but dang if that doesn't look like a timber.

I'll probably be wrong and it's a hog nose.

But definitely stay away until the experts post.

Didn't see the 2 posts above mine when I was typing.

If I've given bad info I do apologize.

Eastern Hognose. Heterodon platyrhinos.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Thanks! Yeah I figured he probably got stirred up with the clearing and he was on the other side of a fence still or I would have gotten a better picture.

Why does their pattern always make me think timber?

Patterning is similar. Timbers are a lot darker and have a white line between some of the patterning.

Also - behavior - hognoses will spread out their neck like a cobra, "strike" (mouth closed), and play dead.

Oh, and range. The only rattlesnakes you'll find in the Houston area would be Western Diamondbacked.

I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

To be honest there was a split second where I thought that was a possibility although it soon dawned on me what it actually was.

An actual Herp guy can speak more to this, but I also generally think a Hognose is much more likely in Houston than a Timber. I caught several hognoses over the years in Houston but think it's pretty far south for Timbers.

Timbers have almost certainly been extirpated from Harris County. Not uncommon in the counties north of there though.

Found this sunbather in a subdivision lake in West Houston.

Additional photo taken this morning. A second DBWS can be found a little higher in the cypress. This particular small pond has at least four snakes.
