That actually looks like it is a cottonmouth/copperhead hybrid. They do occur naturally in the wild and are venomous.

I barely have service but when I get back into town on Sunday I'll try and upload a video of a very big Indigo slithering into my feed pen while I was bow hunting. Snake was every bit of 6.5'

Pay attention to the t-post and watch how far he stretches out. 16' hog panel t-post gap is probably a little under the middle mark (8'). He stretches out a bit and I'd probably put him at about 6.5'. I really wanted to catch him but I'm harnessed in a tree and it's a good ways down... I also didn't want to blow my hunt. Awesome snakes!

Two of the worst snakes would be like this here gaboon viper/rhinoceros viper hybrid. Saw this on a blog and am not sure if I am impressed or terrified by it!

No not a joke. Also copperheads really aren't that bad of a bite as venomous snakes go, cottonmouths have a significantly more deadly venom.

Fresh road kill on a backroad in southern Georgia this weekend. Whoever did it cut the rattles off. Maybe 5 foot long. Eastern version due to location, I presume.

I'm not a herpetologist, but based on my experience of bumping into rattle snakes in the Edwards Plateau, the number of rattles does not correlate to length. Snakes add a new rattle section each time they shed and some snakes shed many times in one year. Sometimes it looks like rattles have broken off. This snake is about 4 ft. long. I've seen other 4 ft. long snakes that did not have this many rattles.

Maybe one of the experts will have more info.

East Milam County. We love snakes, but not this dude close to the house.

Would there be any reason they are moving this time of year in areas they generally aren't found? Never had one at this place in 25 years until this evening.

We're hitting a period of high snake activity/movement. Day length is shrinking & temps. have dropped considerably. Snakes sense that winter is nearby. So, rattlers will be very active for the next several weeks as they seek out a few more meals before winter arrives. Be careful because they will lurk around barns, houses, sheds, wood/brush piles looking for that quick food fix.

Anyone else noticing way more mice this year than previous years? My brother has a place in Rio Vista (40 miles south of FW) and my deer lease ini Eden (60 miles south of Abilene) are both covered up with mice. Our MLD started last weekend and there weree mice inside most of the deer blinds which I've never seen before because they're sealed pretty well. Haven't seen many snakes either so was wondering if there was something going on with snakes this year that's allowing the mice to flourish.
