Thanks. I dont know jack about snakes.

Is playing dead common with snakes? It seemed determined not to run or react when we prodded.

We let him be after deciding he wasn't venomous.

Somewhat common for snakes to play dead. Hognoses are the archetype, but several others with do it as well...

Just saw this on Facebook. Do we have to worry about this in Texas? Copperheads that don't look like copperheads. Striped morph is what I think they called them. Some didn't have any Hershey kisses and were plain.

They turn up in east Texas occasionally. I've seen a few like that in the Sam Houston NF.

On the Facebook pages they have some without any pattern and then some very unusual patters that look nothing like anything I've seen.

Of course they could be changing because of the wild hogs. Kinda like the rattlesnakes did with their rattle.

To keep a VERY long subject/argument short...there was a big stink when some people said rattlesnakes stopped rattling to avoid predation by feral hogs that were invading their lands.

Is that Cottonmouth lighter than most? Most I've seen are much darker, almost black. Does the color differ greatly based on location?

Adults often have a faded version of the same pattern if you look closely, but some are just dark brown or black.

Pictures can be very deceiving as far as size goes, especially without any true reference. I generally try and stay away from size as a guide in photos; Pattern, head, eyes, etc. are all good indicators if the picture is clear enough.

I bet that's a fairly normal sized garter snake. 18-24".
