I believe that is a black-necked garter snake

I think it is actually a young checkered garter snake. Either way, it is unlikely a garter snake would go after a downed dove. Were you hunting by water?

Yes sir. It was also much bigger than this snake. Approximately 3-3.5' long. Looked similar in its marking however. Also in Eden (hour south of Abilene).

Probably actually a diamondback water snake then... Possibly a lightly colored rat snake.

Thanks. After consulting google, it definitely wasn't diamondback water snake but might have been a light colored rat snake.

Sent to me from someone in my neighborhood to ID, think this is the same rat snake I took a picture of a few weeks ago.

I know it is a rat snake, it was pretty close to where I saw one and about the same size so figured it is the same one.

Figured you knew... just being a little bit of a sarcastic ass... It is entirely possible it is the same snake, but I will say that I caught over 20 rat snakes in the same 15X8 foot chicken coop over the course of two weeks one time. I know they were different snakes because I kept them all for those two weeks before my parents found out I was hiding them in a shed by our house.

Stupid question, but do rat snakes have more bones in their skeletons than other snakes? They always appear to have so many more bends than other snakes.

The number of vertebrae and ribs snakes have vary wildly between species. Generally larger species have more ribs and vertebrae. The general range is about 120-400 vertebrae and rib pairs (which would be 240-800 ribs). However some snakes have even more than that.

I have no idea if rat snakes have a relatively large number of ribs for their length, but I suspect the kinking shape they commonly exhibit is more of a habit of the species than an anatomic outlier per se.

People have been having issues with mobile uploads I think. TA clearly has an issue but hopefully working on it.

Saw a post on Facebook claiming this is a new species of rattlesnake found near Waco. Is that a true statement? Cool looking snake for sure.

No, not a new species. That snake was found on a relocation call NW of Austin, which is pretty far east for that species - black tailed rattlesnake
