Severis (Eastern Hognose - Central Texas). He's so scary!!!!

Ziggy (Western Hognose). He is a biter. I need to handle him more. Right now, he's totally food-motivated, and either bites towards your hand, or hoods and musks.

One of my two corn snakes (look the same). They are laid back. Anybody want one? Looking to offload one so I can get a South American Lystrophis (tri-color hognose).

I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

So tonight we were looking at some things in the backyard and discovered this little guy about 2 feet up in a plant.

Around the corner we found this guy chilling on a leaf. Suspect he was waiting for a meal to crawl or fly by, but I suppose it is possible we woke him up though I can't imagine him sleeping in the open like that.

Zoo- Would a corn snake be a good snake for a kid? My boy keeps asking for a pet snake or lizard...

Copperhead and what I think was a juvenile DBWS (not totally sure on that one). Both in our college station neighborhood.

Crazy thing is the copperhead was the second one we saw that day. My son nearly got tagged by an 18" copperhead earlier in the day just walking on the sidewalk. Copperhead was only about a foot away, scared the crap out of me when I saw him. Thankfully he slithered away

Yes, if someone is to get a beginner snake, I always recommend corn snakes.

We're moving to Trussville (just north-east of Birmingham) and our property has a great wooded area. What critters should I encourage our 7 and 4 year old boys to look out for both in a positive and negative way. We are coming from the suburbs on the south side of Houston, so the only real wildlife they see are the occasional opossum, armadillo, and Harold the red shouldered hawk who lives in our neighborhood.

I'd assume moccasins (don't know how far north they go), definitely copperheads and possibly timber rattlers as far as venomous.

Non-venomous - rat snakes primarily.

Also Eastern corals there and they are more dangerous than our Texas Coral Snake

Definitely moccasins in the Birmingham area and north. We've got boatloads of them here in the Memphis area which is 3 hours or so northwest of Birmingham. In fact here's one that I may have posted on last years thread below.

zoo guy, would you know if we have timber rattlers or coral snakes around Memphis? Never heard about anyone seeing a coral but have heard stories of a rattler but very rare if it was true.

Speaking of timber rattlers, here's one from PA from a couple years back.

I want in on this comparison. If I am looking for them, I will see at least 2-3 on any given night from late April until September. Most in one night was 14 in 45 minutes of looking. Out of curiosity, where do you and Mouth live? My camp is about 3 miles southeast of Sublime.......10 miles east of Hallettsville for those who have never heard of Sublime.
