And, if it is in Virginia and they can catch it (and it's close enough), I'll come get it. I have a Western And Eastern hognose as a pet and live in East Tennessee.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Yes my friend is in Roanoke and confirmed he saw it while mowing today. Interesting to hear it's not native. Thanks for both of your replies.

Ask if they can still see it! Roanoke is close enough!

How much work is it to care for hognose? Pretty easy to keep them happy/healthy?
Easterns - no. Extremely difficult to care for. I had changed mine to eating mice (they eat amphibians in the wild), but he quit eating this winter (which isn't uncommon), and wouldn't eat the usual mouse scented with a frozen toad. So, I always keep some frozen toads/frogs in the deep freeze. I'm raising some tadpoles I found until they turn into frogs (at which point I'll freeze them and use them to scent frozen mice).

Western hognoses are probably medium. They can be a bit finicky on eating mice (usually they're not, as most you get as a pet are captive-bred), but they are lizard eaters in the wild mainly. They'll also eat bird eggs, amphibians, and occasionally mice (in the wild). They also have a saliva that can induce swelling if they were to bite you (they have teeth in the middle of their mouths; mine is an aggressive feeder, mainly cause I need to handle him more - I've been bitten before which was my mistake, and my thumb swelled up a little). They aren't like corn snakes - who if I don't work with them for months and only feed them regularly, I can still pick them up and they quickly chill out.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

He said he thinks it's his neighbor's, now that we know it's a pet. If something changes I'll let you know ASAP

Ok. Good enough. My sister lives in Lynchburg, so I could probably get her to come pick it up if needed.

My girls and I went fishing this afternoon and had a visitor as we were getting ready to leave. He made a quick meal out of a few minnows we had thrown out.

What's the best thing to do in a situation like this?

A while ago when I was still pretty ignorant about snakes, I killed one almost as long as I am tall (6' 3").

I wasn't really in a place to try and "catch" it and I had a screaming wife and a curious 10lb puppy sniffing the other end of it so before anything else happened I lopped it's head off.

Now that I know more, how would one go about catching and relocating a big snake like that?

I'm in North Austin.

Brooms and square trash cans work well. Sweep snake gently into trash can.

Or just let them be, especially if it's non-venomous. A rat snake like that will relocate itself after it's finished feeding on whatever vermin attracted it. Unless you have laying hens that are giving it a steady, easy food source.

The problem of letting it be is the wife. Gotta sleep with her not the snake

I may need to start carrying my phone on me during my runs, came across 2 broad brand water snakes and one diamondback that was about 3-4 feet long.

They stick to the drainages once they get along the coast, but they make it to the San Antonio River most likely, like copperheads.
