The Spurs defense is what sets them apart this year and if they beat GS it will be because of that, not their offense. The Spurs just can't compete with the Warriors on offense but GS isn't as consistent on defense. Neither Duncan or Parker are the offensive threats they once were but they have been playing great defense, especially Tony. We've talked quite a bit about Danny's offensive struggles this year but without his defense we don't beat the Warriors.

The Spurs offense has changed and Pop has done this intentionally. Those expecting the Spurs offense of 14 to show up are going to be disappointed because that's not who they are trying to be anymore. Sure, it's not as pretty but Pop does not want to run and gun with GS and he has been all-in on the Kawhi/Aldridge combo and giving them room to operate. If the Spurs beat GS, they will win ugly and with defense. It's been Pops intention all year long.

This is true, but I wish we were better at establishing position and making entry passes once the mismatch has been created. Seems like we lose 5 or 8 seconds trying to figure out how to get the ball into the post fairly often. Our guards haven't quite figured out how to read the defensive positioning to determine how far down the baseline to go before making the pass, so there are lots of awkward angles. Aldridge and Leonard don't seal as well as well as Diaw.

I can agree with that. I know it's not the same team as in '14. And it's not like we can run against GS like we did against the Suns. It just feels like we lack an offensive identity at times. But maybe that's by design.

The bench and the starters run very different concepts. I'd almost like to see us go to a true platoon system in the playoffs, with allowances for matchups.

I've actually been pretty encouraged lately. They've been winning while playing everyone and not getting huge offensive contributions from several guys who we counted on in the past. They are still second in the league in FG percentage and I feel like rebounding has become a huge weapon. Defense, rebounding and efficient offense wins in the playoffs. It might not be the beautiful game of 2014 but it's effective and it might just grind out everyone including GSW.

So who plays in this 3 game road trip coming up? (Jazz, Warriors/Nuggets b2b)

I can see Pop sitting at LEAST the big 3 and Kawhi in Oakland.

If the Spurs intentionally lose the res of their games, they will still have the best record in team history.

Yep, the NBA is really, really down this year.

The West is pretty terrible this year. Good thing the Spurs aren't on that list!

Well, Diaw will miss all 3 and won't travel with the team, due to soreness in his adductor. (Wtf is an adductor?)

Adductor brings a limb close to the center of the body. You have them in your hips, legs, arms, wrists, feet, toes, etc.

I'm not trolling. We have a great team this year, but can you honestly say that this is the all-time greatest Spurs team?

SIAP but does anyone know how to get Spurs games on DirecTV while living in Houston, and they aren't on National TV or playing the Rockets? It seems we can watch if they're on FSSW Nola, or FSSW Dallas, but for whatever reason the games get blacked out. If anyone has a "work-around" that works for you here in Houston, can you let me know?

Thanks guys, and Go Spurs Go!

In theory you could change your service address to a SA area address. I've done that in CS to get Houston locals.

I've dwelled on this topic some, and I think that two good indicators are the Clippers and Thunder.
I don't think these two teams have fallen off like the rest of the West. I think they are about the same as they have been the last few years, with the exception of the OKC team last year (Durant out).

The Clippers have a worse record this year than the past few years (and during the season they were actually better with Griffin out, than with him, so it wasn't just the absence of Blake).

Likewise, the OKC Thunder have their lowest WP of the last 5 seasons (removing the Durant injury season).

If the West and NBA was so down, than why aren't these two teams having significantly better winning percentages than in the past?

This isn't to deny/approve on the greatness of this Spurs teams relative to the others (Spurs teams), but more to the idea that the NBA is really down this year because I have felt that way as well, but I'm not seeing the Clippers and Thunder reap a better record because of that, and they should have as well, if it were true.

I don't really think the NBA is down this year. In fact, I think it's gotten better. Outside of Philadephia and the Lakers, there are not really any other god-awful teams. Phoenix has a few nice players that can play, Minnesota has KAT, Wiggins, Rubio and LaVine who all play pretty good ball. Sacramento is decent with Cousins, Rondo and Gay. Milwaukee isn't a terrible team with Gianis, Middleton, and Parker.

I could go on but those are all non-Playoff teams that have gotten much better even though they aren't to the playoff level yet.

I think the Warriors and Spurs are just that great and the really good teams are getting picked off more frequently by these lower tier teams that are improving.

Pop sure is playing the starters heavy minutes for a road game with nothing to gain but chemistry.

Considering the Jazz could be a first round opponent, I think they have something to demonstrate.

I for one applaud him for wanting to silence the Jazz.

I think the Jazz are the only team from 5-9 that are actually excited for some playoff action and are too young to know they don't have a chance. Their a little dangerous..

The Spurs are in the process of choking away a 16 point 4th quarter lead. Down to 2 with ~5 minutes left

Parker, Anderson, Leonard were all money down the stretch. Great win. Pops lineups were sharp tonight. This was a double digit win if they guarded the white stiff to start the 4th.

Hah. Well they did choke away the lead and actually fell behind 84-83 in the final minute before pulling the game out. I'm sure Pop would agree, though, that they didn't play their best in the 4th q.

1,000 career wins for Tim Duncan, all with the Spurs. Five Titles and guaranteed Hall of Fame is not enough to showcase what an amazing talent Timmy has been for the NBA and San Antonio.

"Guaranteed Hall of Fame" is supposed to be impressive and for most players it would be, but for Duncan it almost looks cheap and silly to bother talking about his career in terms of whether he'll make it into the Hall.

First, imagine the Kawhi that graduated from San Diego State a few years ago. Remember how awkward he looked dribbling the ball, how slow and ugly his shot was. Now watch this video. The tight crossover leaving a point guard in the dust, the crisp release, the perfect balance and body control in the post. Incredible transformation, I've never seen a player improve this much.
