The Warriors defense was fantastic. That's how they won the game.

It was great. But we also dribbled the ball off of our legs about 8 times or something in the first half. Our guys were too amped up. And it was one of those nights where balls go halfway down into the bucket and bounce back out.

I'll say this though, if our bigs can't move Draymond, we won't win this series come playoff time.

It was certainly one of those nights. It's normal for the ball to bounce 1 way. But to have fumbled clumsy offense, balls going in and out of hoop. Rebounds bouncing straight to the 1 Warrior in a cluster of Spurs. It was a weird night. But that's what a total beat down looks like.

Which begs the question, is it a beat down because of the team playing lights out, or a beat down because nothing is bouncing the way of the team playing like garbage? Chicken and egg and all that.

If I'm being serious, the Warriors had a big hand in how terribly we played. But we sure helped them out quite a bit too. I've never seen us have multiple trips down the floor where we dribble the ball off of ourselves and lose the possession. We had at least two maybe three of those in a row in the first half...multiple times.

Defensively, I think we missed Timmy D more than we thought. Last night was all about help defense and Timmy is our best help defender. You can also tell that lineup wasn't used to playing together. Our starting lineup defense has gotten so good and polished lately that you can tell the difference when one guy is out.

I know I shouldn't find this funny since we did just get smacked, but I can't help it, from PtR:

Good point about lineups and missing Timmy. I would say though that a lot of what I saw was a direct or indirect result of the incredible team the Warrios have. Currys ability to push a lead in a matter of seconds is staggering. We looked shell shocked.

Bad shoulder Patty Mills was better than post surgery Patty Mills is

Just no. Bad shoulder Patty couldn't hit the broad side of a barn last year.

Patty has been great all season. This is one game. In January. A win or a loss was going to be over analyzed to death by fans and media alike.

Now our guys know how it feels to get whooped. They haven't been in this situation all year. Let's let them respond before we all start freaking out.
Bad shoulder Patty Mills was 2014 season. Two years ago. He went under the knife after we got revenge on Miami.

I stand by my statement. 2014 Patty Mills > 2015 or 2016 Patty Mills.

Edit - after a quick search, looks like you're right, though he's pretty much in between 2014 and 2015 in terms of stats.

The defensive rotations were noticeably bad in the first quarter. I'm quite certain that West made several mistakes early. He did try to make up for it on the offensive end, he competed. Just didn't execute. Timmy would make a difference here but he's not going to make THAT big of a difference.

It was interesting to see all of the coverages Pop tried. I thought the switch everything approach worked great. Unfortunately, one guy would eventually miss a switch and the whole thing breaks down. I noticed this happened to Simmons a couple of times. Once again, these are all correctable. You have to be able to keep the game close to give our inside game a chance to wear them down. We were seeing glimpses of doing some damage but nowhere near enough to make up for the mistakes.

Bad game. The Warriors are really good.

However

Aldridge did not play like an all star. You're a big man. Go move Draymond Green and get buckets. You're paid a lot of money to do that. And on defense, at some point before the game is out of reach you have to at least be in the frame when someone is tossing in a layup.

Help defense was CRAP. We'd get the first rotation, but the second one was late or non-existent. Twice Leonard tried to trap off of Shaun Livingston and there was no rotation, leading to wide open dunks. Transition defense didn't get back consistently. Stupid turnovers led to those fast breaks. We got three of their starters in foul trouble, but then didn't consistently go at those players. Not a playoff effort. West was the only starter who looked like he really wanted to play. Aldridge has been playing lazy on defense for the last couple weeks.

That said, Simmons showed that he belongs on the court with anyone. He didn't score a ton, but he was aggressive (though with turnovers) and played solid on-ball defense even though he got called for some "all star missed a shot, the rookie must have fouled him" fouls. Plenty of good film for him to learn from both ways.

You live with Curry having a night like that, but you can't have 26 mostly live ball turnovers, let the defending champs turn them into fast breaks, and expect to win.

Plenty of time to watch tape, work on issues, continue to coach these guys up, etc. Only mid season now and we don't even play the Warriors again for quite some time.
Pop will fix **** and get it correct. I have no worry about that. Just need to keep grinding b/c we can beat Golden State if we play our game.
Last night was definitely one to forget.

Golden State held serve.
Spurs need to do the same on Mar 19.

I think the biggest takeaway for me was how bad the starters played in relation to golden states. Aldridge, Parker, Leonard, Green and of course Duncan (who was not suited), all played well below their norm. I think our bench is so much of an advantage usually, leading to so many blowouts, that our starters rarely get pushed that hard and it showed. The starters have to play much better to compete with the warriors.

Our defenders played like they were tied to Curry. All 5 followed him around and left other guys wide open or lead to us scrambling if Curry gave up the ball.

On the bright side the Spurs played like garbage, so I think a lot of this can be thrown away. If you watched the last few games, you could tell the team was losing focus.

Now we can restart and get things going again.

Houston is ****ed.

I was only able to watch the first half... yep, we played like crap and Curry was so dialed in he would have shot 60% from half court. You could probably see it coming a mile away... Spurs have been on a role and it was bound to end, while the Warriors have looked sorta bored and needed something to fire them up.

The player I was really disappointing in was Aldridge. Guys shot was WAY off and he never once seemed to act like the big man on our team. But overall it wasn't one guy... the entire team was just off.

If we can take it to them in our house this game will mean nothing, but if they continue to pound us all season then it's probably a pretty good indication of them just being that much better than the rest of the league when the games really count.

We traded blowouts with GS last year, too. It's all good. Let's get 'em when they show up at the Phone Booth.

Hope Timmy gets better soon.

Next year is a player option.

He will be on de facto year to year contract as long as he wants to play basketball in San Antonio.

Maybe he will make the Derek fisher transition and become our coach when pop leaves.
