What I had to come to understand about the NBA all star game is the fans don't care about actual play on the court; it is all about popularity. Kobe is immensely popular and his farewell all star game will get lots of eyeballs that might not normally watch.
In a way being picked by the coaches for the bench is more rewarding because you are chosen for your play this season.
In the end no one remembers the starters, just who made the team.
I mean I totally understand that it's Kobe's last year, but he's been voted as all star for the last few years, including years where he maybe played 10 games max due to injury. I just think there has to be a way to honor him with it being his last year instead of giving him a spot he doesn't deserve

This is the league where Magic Johnson started in the all star game after he "retired" and didn't play a minute that season. Ironically, that is one of the most memorable all star games of all time. Maybe Kobe will go off in the game an make it worth while.
That being said, I'm hoping for a quick sub with Draymond. So we get to see Curry, Westbrook, Leonard, Durant and Green together. That could be the greatest small ball lineup of all time! And if you think about it, is a realistic US Olympic team with Pop coaching it.

The end of the game turned into a one-on-one with Magic vs. all his "buddies". I know Isiah Thomas was one of them and Jordan was another. The crowd went nuts and the rest of the players basically backed away and let it happen like it was just two kids in their driveway showing off. It really was a cool moment and Magic didn't disappoint.
