Don't disagree that the long lines are not all for international travel or Hawaii. But you stated that they were not needed for travel which is untrue.

If I had to theorize, it's a combination of:
- people who actually have COVID
- people who have any other flu-like symptom and have been scared to death
- hypochondriacs
- people who need tests to go to work or school
- people who need them for travel

We have now created so many use cases in society for testing that there is an enormous bottleneck. Then we act all surprised when everything screeches to a halt.

It's not required for travel, it's required for some international travel. That probably makes up a very small portion of the tests.

But agree with everything else.

With all the caveats (true and otherwise)...7 Day New Cases up 250% and a 33.7% Positive Rate. That's insane.

Thank God (seriously) O is wimp.

Wasn't this inevitable with the R value of this variant?

Oh yeah. Wasn't any stopping this train. Sorry Clay; grin and bare it.

Doc Jock was reading something that said O must have mutated in an immunocompromised person given the number of mutations. AIDS patient in Africa maybe?

Forgot we are being serious . The African immunocompromised patient that carries covid for a long time while it mutates is still just a theory of the source for omicron. Reality is they haven't been able to prove it nor have they confirmed omicron came from Africa at all. They are just suspicious because a few cases have been found where immunocompromised people have been long haulers where the virus mutates over time. They found people like this from the other continents as well

So big picture, that theory cannot be proven

Doctors response who most of the local news goes to for quotes, obviously they won't publish this, but Dr. Kahn says 'We are certainly seeing increasing numbers of children being admitted to the hospital with covid, not because of covid, that's for sure'.

And not sure why our local hospitals can't publish data like what NY is doing...never thought I'd say that!

"This strain of omicron is more contagious than any other virus, including the bubonic plague," said Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, citing the work of medical historians.

Jenkins said the grim numbers require the same response he's been pushing since early last year: more testing, more masking, more distancing, and more vaccinations."

When in doubt I always get my medical and public policy advise from historians.

So this comment from the article seems in conflict with the assertion that social distancing would help drive down the transmissibility of covid relative to the Black Death:
Quote:

Of course, the cultural context of the pandemic is also important. The Black Death was spreading in Medieval Europe, where travel was rare, whereas COVID quickly took over a very globalized world.
Has there been any research on if those beaked plague masks actually slow the spread of the plague? Were they relatively better or worse than current masks at preventing transmission?

Also saw this today:

Would imagine that the one other Dem option, Mr. Billy Clark (retired US Air Force vet whose currently a "civil rights lawyer") is the only non-Clay candidate with more than a 0% chance to win.

What do you think about requiring masks in public places?

Clay Jenkins, incumbent Democrat:

My current order requires masking in commercial buildings, county buildings and public schools. It was drafted in consultation with the Public Health Committee made up of experts in infectious disease, epidemiology and public health. Masking in public spaces, such as retail settings, also helps protect staff and consumers, which helps keep these types of settings open and our economy strong.

Billy Clark, Democrat:

I believe that each business should be allowed to determine if masks should be required at their particular establishment. The bottom line, if a person does not desire to patronize a business that doesn't require a mask, then that person does not have to go there. Additionally, nothing will stop a customer from choosing to wear a mask. In general, our elected leaders should spend more time actively fighting COVID-19 than policing public places' mask-use enforcement.

Edwin Flores, Republican:

There should be no mask mandates in public places. At this time, due to the combined percentages of vaccinated individuals and post-COVID patients. I would encourage voluntary masking for people with pre-existing conditions.

Lauren Davis, Republican:

Mandates do not work and should not be forced on the citizens of Dallas County.

Oh me too...but sort of like with the recent NYC mayoral race, the absolute best case scenario a non-leftist/non-Covidian in a blue county can hope for is "normal" democrats winning out over #woke/progressive democrats....or in this case, winning out over a guy whose sole purpose on earth is promoting the mask religio-i mean-science.

The Bubonic Plague was caused by bacteria, not a virus.
