Interesting facebook entry from Grimes County today.

A new coming / going entry: SpaceX investing in the old power plant site at Gibbons Creek?

https://www.kbtx.com/2026/05/06/grimes-county-residents-seeking-more-answers-about-possible-spacex-facility/

...The county's notice estimates $55 billion in capital investment for initial phases, with the total reaching as high as $119 billion if additional phases are built.

The project is described in the notice as a "transformative investment" aimed at expanding domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity."

What's the total value of everything in Grimes County? This might triple it.

You guys in SoCo thought your property values were high.

If mine double what the county says its worth now, we're cashing in and buying an RV.

If we get SpaceX, it will more than double....

I think it's the fresh water source they find attractive. Could be wrong on that. Btw, I live in King Oaks off of 30. Can't imagine what it will do to property values.

I remember when Tesla was announced in Austin. Some of the numbers reported by real estate friends were off the charts. And this is 10 times bigger.

If I had to guess I would think its the existing grid connection and infrastructure that are still there. What used to export electricity from the Gibbons Creek powergen plant will now be used to bring power in for the chip factory, is my guess. A lot of work went into planning and procuring those high-tension right of ways, and the enormous substation is still there now. I've been wondering when it was going to be grabbed. These old sites are gold now - the old Alcoa brick factory sites are a similar case, substations already sitting there waiting to be used.

It's absolutely the key ingredient. A prior electric production brownfield is the perfect electric receiver brownfield. It's physics.

There is a ton of Solar out there and direct lines to Natural Gas plants to the south and Coal Power Plants to the North. He could also add a Natural Gas plant onto the property. It was almost done when the coal plant was shut down. There is so much land to the south of the reservoir that is reclaimed from coal mining that you can build for the next decade and have a lot of land left over.

Had no idea. Knew they took the stacks down out there.

Taking down stacks didn't remove all the transmission lines. A drive to Yankees Tavern or Roans Prairie makes that clear.

Elon Musk: " This is one of several locations under consideration for what will be the largest and most advanced chip fabrication facility in the world "

Grimes County may have been a little premature with the champagne........

Not sure it was Grimes County that leaked it. It was the local media. Austin politician said something along the lines of "we're not done yet". Allegedly, there are 2 more sites. I've heard Bastrop is one of them but that may be confused with the smaller $20 billion unit near Giga that's already public. That's basically a mock-up for the big one.

I first saw it trotted out on the Grimes County facebook page, which proves nothing of course. I think this would be a near-perfect site though, given the proximity to both IAH, NASA, and A&M..

After snowmageddon, Samsung plant in Austin area basically built their own gas plant for backup power, including the option to truck in fuel (LNG?) if needed. Second plant was built with one too. Very expensive problem when the power went out and everything in process was now scrap.

Fans of a certain city do that all the time on this board so it shouldn't be a surprise to see Champaign corks "knocking out of the park."

I think it was on the county agenda to consider possible tax abatement. Losing out on the deal because it got out before SpaceX was locked in is why this stuff is usually done under NDA.

Try the Monterey Jack Ribeye Sandwich or go on Wednesday for Steak Night. Burgers are also excellent, as are their wings and CFS.

Sign (permanent-looking) up for Javi's. Of course, they'll have to wait for the city to finish Lincoln Ave to open for real...

Thank you to our local heroes at Mojo Tortilla Co!

Big thanks and a huge shoutout to Costa and Andreas, and the entire Mojo Tortilla team
for providing delicious breakfast tacos at a great price for Teacher Appreciation Week.
We delivered them to a local school, and the teachers absolutely loved them.

Teachers have one of the most challenging, often thankless jobs out there but thanks to Mojo Tortilla Co, at least one school's staff felt truly appreciated with some awesome breakfast tacos. They were a hit.

Thanks again to the whole team.

Thanks so much. I will pass this on to the real heroes, the team at Mojo Toritlla Co. It's their hard work and dedication that gets the job done every day and they are the ones who hand rolled those tacos on the fresh tortillas they hand made!

Quick question: Do you use seed oils in the making of the tortillas? By that I mean anything other than olive oil, avocado oil, butter, lard, or beef tallow.
