Just for clarity on the food in northgate issue, there is an ordinance against being open to serve food/be open after 2am in NG-1. The authorities want everyone out of there asap at closing. Before anyone asks, yes this includes food trucks, restaurants etc that don't serve alcohol.

The clear beneficiaries are Taco Bell, McDonald's, Fuego, Burger Mojo etc.

I wonder if this is one of the reasons Antonio's left. I thought I remember them being open until 3

Why not? If the restaurant serves the market, is reasonably priced, and has good food and service, anytime is a good time to open. Dined in Roadhouse in CS for the first time in years (usually we take out) this week and it was beyond packed. Beyond packed. Good service, clean, fast, felt like I got my money's worth.

Absolutely it was one of the reasons. Steve Reves, a fellow Greek and friend from Providence, RI, is the founder of Antonio's. When they opened here they never hit the numbers that the New England stores hit, but they did ok. He was willing to live with that. Mostly, his NE stores had way more pedestrian traffic than here.

Once the 2am thing hit, they dropped in sales significantly. With what was an already mediocre performance situation that he was already living with that then got further degraded in sales, he looked for an exit. His NE stores always were doing double the sales of this one. I can only imagine that after the 2am thing that the CS store went down to 1/3. He was very happy to be done last time we spoke.

CoCS hates northgate. I think a lot of people living in COLLEGE Station despise the university. Especially folks in local government positions.

How ludicrous is it that businesses are limited by the height of their signs and color schemes but it is ok to build 23 story buildings in North Gate.

Technically the 23 story buildings are not OK and have to get exceptions. I'm sure them getting exceptions is all above board.

Having to close at 2AM makes sense for not not having a Waffle House there as that would kill 90% of their business, was not aware that was a rule. Just put one close to to NG, but far enough that it can be open late. It would be stupid not to.

Would probably have to put it in Bryan.

Thought of you guys tonight. Made as close to a "hortopita" as I could using chard, dandelion and chicory from the garden, and the usual eggs and Greek cheese blend. Now if A&M pulls off this game it will taste even better!

I think a lot of people don't like students but don't realize that without the students the money would go away.

I LOVE living near a college town. When I go to HEB, it's a smiling student that checks me out. They are smiling knowing this is a temp job. Go to an HEB or other grocery store in a non-college town, they are depressed because for a lot of the it's the best job they will ever have. Yes there are some challenges but I'll take the college student challenges compared to living in a depressed economic town. Done that. Got the t shirt. Not fun.

Texas Archery (currently with a Spring location) opening 10000 block State Hwy 30. Uncertain timeline. Also - heard that Live Oak Archery in Bryan may have closed. No confirmation on that but no recent social media post.

It was. Trying "Chicago style Greek roast potatoes" to go with the rest of the phyllo greens pie.

None of which I'd have to do if you guys would just open a Greek restaurant here already!

I know, I know. I'm very reticent due to the risk level for several reasons. Without listing them all here and stirring up a hornet's nest of debate, I will say only what the main one is.

I believe that such a place should be owner operated, with the owner on site all of the time gladhanding and making special dishes for regulars. I did that at cafe eccell for 25 years and now I'm more focused on quality of life with family.

With the way we are scaling and designing our concepts, we won't be able to be on site at one unit to the degree that something like that would require. Right now we're nimble and can have face time in multiple locations daily, and we like that better.

Lastly, never say never lol. If the stars align on a location and the proper model crafted, you never know. If the whole of Houston has say, 5 or 6 Greek restaurants, that says something to me. We would proceed with cautious discernment.

A Trader Joe's would do amazing in South CS. I don't necessarily like it but it would be nice from time to time to avoid the hassle of a large supermarket.

Trader Joe's and Aldi's are owned by the same parent company (also named Aldi's), so that helps, if they share the same supply chain. A small format Central Market would also work. Whole Foods, as far as I know, doesn't have a small format offering, and their larger stores are struggling. We had a new one in Flower Mound before we moved here, and they were barely making a go of it.
Sadly for me, Century Square would probably be the best location for one of these, if Century Square will open up their parking. Paid parking is a drawback for grocery.
We'll probably have something new in Macy's soon, and I expect our loss to exceed the amount we paid for the building, when you add the cost of capital, the multi-year loss of property and sales tax revenue, and maintenance. But our City Manager ignores these basic facts, while preaching revisionist history at every turn.

Central Market!!!!!!!!

That would make my shopping life complete. But not enough money in BCS for that.

That would be nice. Years ago, the Oracle from Yelp was convinced a Central Market was promised for here (despite their own market research saying the opposite). He threw an anti-HEB tantrum that was one for the books.

I think just one look at the central market locations page gives a quick answer. Based on the limited locations and where they are, it seems delusional to think this town would qualify for one, although I wish it would of course.

Not exactly true. Aldi split a while back into 2 separate companies. Some kind of family disagreement. The US Aldi does not own Trader Joe's. The European version of Aldi owns Trader Joe's.

I mean yeah. Like Costa said with markets, if there's only one (1) Central Market in Houston, that says something about its prospects for College Station.
