I was walking my Aussie or I would have taken a better picture. She does pretty good around snakes, but is not quite 2 years old. She didn't really get too excited though.

Just off the Pasture in east texas (Henderson), on fence line. Not really any water nearby. Was thinking moccasin, but wasn't sure with the yellow stripes on the belly. Any ideas?

100% Cottonmouth. They're not 100% aquatic but rather near water snakes. 12fmane or Badace can probably elaborate more on that, I just know that they're not the fish eaters and aquatic snakes like a DBWS and others.

The mascara is strong with that one.

Also nice taper on the tail.

What length? I'm not good on guessing in pictures. 2 to 2.5 feet?

Fat and short 2.5-3 footer. Been eating good. Damn near walked right on top of it

Saw movement about 10 feet away in my peripheral during a morning hike… took me a sec to spot where the movement came from.

Neat. Used to see green snakes often. Haven't seen one in years.

Also: 5 footer caught in the hen house.

Rat Snake but I can see the confusion with a bull snake with this guys pattern.

The real hint on the post was saying he found it in the chicken coop which usually means rat snake aka "chicken snake"

This... It does have a bullsnake-like quality to the pattern and coloration but the head is a dead giveaway.

Yeah, some of our rat snakes here are almost orangish yellow for the light color.

Family debate going on as to what this was. No head or tail available to help identify. Rat? Or Rattler?

Are you suggesting that mambas migrate?

The head was throwing me off. Most rats are fairly slim heads. But everything else was spot on.

it is flaring out the head cuz it is very scared/angry and trying to look bigger and more dangerous. if it was at rest, the head would look round.

This request is for 12F Mane. My daughter is a freshman at ULL and is taking a survival class as one of her electives, She is putting together a project on the venomous snakes of the local area along with mimics. She has learned a lot over the years from these annual threads and is especially appreciative of 12F Mane's photography. With that in mind she wants to know if you'd be okay with her using some of your photos (giving full credit, of course). She's specifically looking for photos of:

pygmy, eastern diamondback, and timber rattlesnake
water mocassin
copperhead (there's a fantastic shot on the first page this year)
Texas and eastern coral snake
scarlet king
dbws, mgws, bbws,
hognose (pygmy rattlesnake coloration)
any other mimics you might suggest

She can certainly find photos in the public domain, but is very impressed with your knowledge and work. Thanks for all you do to educate.

Her instructor misidentified a hognose as a pbws on a slide. She corrected him after class, and asked if she could change her project to snake ID, and he agreed. She's a pretty awesome kid.
