The rattlesnakes up there use more venom than the ones in Texas...the ones here save theirs in case they get found by feral hogs when they rattle.

Stumbled upon this one with my 3.5 yo while walking our land yesterday. I'm almost positive on the ID but will withhold and let others guess. Location: lavaca and Fayette county line.

I agree. My very first thought when I saw the picture was "rat snake crinkle", but I have never heard of them being solid brown like that in the US. Is it some weird morph of a rat snake?

Correct. Hognose is what I identified it as, though it took me a second. My immediate reaction was to grab my toddler as we were walking. After running through my check-downs I knew it wasn't venomous but couldn't name it until I saw the nose up close. He/she was very docile! We just caught it getting some heat in the sun. It scurried on its way after a few mins.
