The end of the tail always throws me for a loop!! I think its venomous but I am wrong.

I stepped out the back door to play fetch with the dog, the ball leaves my hand as soon as I'm out the door. Mid throw I see this guy near where I'm throwing to, my thought was, "oh crap!" I have had a dog bitten by a rattle snake before.

I quickly got the dog inside so I could get a better look.

King snake, I believe, 3.5 to 4 feet long. Didn't have much inclination to move, once he finally did, he shook his tail like a rattler the quickly made an exit.

Thanks, it looked like some king snake pictures I've seen, but rat snake will work.

I can ID the venomous ones that inhabit my yard.

King snakes have small heads. Also the give away for me is the shape of its blotches. Some describe them as sheriff badges.

The snake returned tonight. This time, my pup discovered him. My big, brave guard dog is apparently terrified of snakes. I'm not upset about that. Even when I got him to the back door 40' from the snake, he wouldn't sit, he was checking to make sure the snake wasn't sneaking up behind him. Finally, he did sit, but facing where he last saw the snake.
