At my dad's place in Gordon. Walking stick is around 3 and a half feet long. Walked past it and then when he came back by it was coiled with its head/body sticking up about a foot and a half and rattling at him.

So this guy came out of the high grass when I was mowing around the pond. Pretty much slithered directly under me so I couldn't stop in time. No sign of the head or anal plate so I can't figure him out. I've only seen water snakes around my ponds but this guy had a bit of a smell to him when he got diced up.

That is my assessment, but honestly it's somewhat hard to tell. I'd say I'm about 90% sure it's a prairie kingsnake.

I'd give it a 10% chance of great plains ratsnake too.

12f mane might be able to give a more definitive answer.

To me the smaller size of the blotches and increased number sets it apart from similarly patterned snakes.

When you can see the head/neck area it also makes it easier as prairie kingsnakes have less of an obvious "neck" area as compared to similarly patterned snakes such as great plains ratsnakes, young western ratsnakes, corn snakes, etc...

Timber Rattlesnake?

Wife, dog and I walked in front of it as it was crossing the road. It'll be our last night walk without a flashlight. Barely saw it as it was stretched across the road.

Location: Grimes County
Size: 4+ feet

We're actually closer to Salt Gap. I thought bull snake at first, but it didn't rattle or get aggressive at all. Spotted him in the road while moonlight cruising in the ranger. He was much calmer than my brother when I handed him off to grab a photo for this thread.

Man, I can't even begin to count how much time I spent tromping all over the woods in the Navasota bottoms growing up and through my time at A&M and never once did I see a timber rattler. Lots of water moccasins and copperheads and coral snakes but never a timber. I didn't even think they got that far west.
