I have a seven footer hanging on my moms wall that I killed when I was young and dumb. I was within 3' of it when I killed it. Btw, it did not go to waste. We ate it that same day.

Agree that it sounds like a speckled king snake. They are not venomous, but they like to eat venomous snakes.
They are one of the good guys.

That's the closest I've seen to what I recall but doesn't match what I remember exactly. But at this point it's probably been too long. I'll keep an eye out and try and snap a picture next time.
