It's probably also that all the other snakes are almost completely inactive. DBWS will stay active at cooler temperatures than most other s akes as they are nearly entirely aquatic and constantly live at cooler/more stable temperatures due to their aquatic environments.

It isn't really a variation of rat snake so much as it is a species in the rat snake family Pantherophis. The Texas/Western/Black Rat Snake = Pantherophis obsoletus (which many call the chicken snake) is another species in the same Pantherophis family.
Corn snake = Pantherophis guttatus
