It's probably also that all the other snakes are almost completely inactive. DBWS will stay active at cooler temperatures than most other s akes as they are nearly entirely aquatic and constantly live at cooler/more stable temperatures due to their aquatic environments.

i know people hate snakes and all that but i don't understand how you can look at this thing and think anything but "that thing is really badass".

I will guess a rat snake that is either a juvenile or had it's tail chewed on.

In another group I am in, they say a corn snake is a variation of a rat snake. Is that correct?

It isn't really a variation of rat snake so much as it is a species in the rat snake family Pantherophis. The Texas/Western/Black Rat Snake = Pantherophis obsoletus (which many call the chicken snake) is another species in the same Pantherophis family.

Corn snake = Pantherophis guttatus

From about 6 months ago. Was playing catch with my son in the backyard in flip flops and almost stepped on it. If I had to do it again I would've thrown him over the fence.
