The biggest problem with whiptails is that it doesn't take much for them to speciate. They are all very closely related and can hybridize rather easily. This is because they can reproduce asexually. There are entire species where the whole known population is entirely female. They are what are known as a parthenogenic organism. The whole thing is rather fascinating, but makes drawing species lines between whiptail lizards nearly futile.
