The biggest problem with whiptails is that it doesn't take much for them to speciate. They are all very closely related and can hybridize rather easily. This is because they can reproduce asexually. There are entire species where the whole known population is entirely female. They are what are known as a parthenogenic organism. The whole thing is rather fascinating, but makes drawing species lines between whiptail lizards nearly futile.

Interesting. I knew the part about the all female reproduction, but never thought about what it might mean for species DNA and IDing them.

This just popped up in my YouTube feed and I have to say that it bothers me to hear a physician incorrectly call a copperhead a "poisonous" snake rather than venomous. Same for the victim. I mean, this is a scripted piece. Get the terminology correct.

Grew up in SB. Graduated in the HS. Spent many years snake hunting as a kid. Back then all the bayous were completely wild. Just drainage with critters everywhere. Good times

Was wading in a bass pond this morning when I noticed this guy just a few feet away from me. Puckered pretty tight for a split second then quickly realized wasn't venomous. He popped up again a little further away and was able to snap a few pics. Pbws I'm pretty sure.

Lived off Slaughter lane on Chisholm Trail back in the 70's, Dad was a volunteer fireman with the Manchaca Fire Department and that's not how we pronounced it. ManCHaka.
