What's this? He was by my garage when I pulled in today. Then climbed up a bush next to my house

I have found a copperhead coiled in my front flowerbed the last two nights, but I let them be because they go away by dawn.

That is a huge copperhead.

Pretty cool they're so closely related that they have such similar behaviors they will engage across species.

I've been hiking the Appalachian Trail and two days ago in Southern Virginia I had great timing to witness this Eastern Garter snake attack and eat what I think is a Northern Slimy Salamander.

The only way I know how to post this video is with a you tube link. Below is a link to my entire hiking video for that day. The action starts at the 3:50 mark. Enjoy.

Probably a silly question that's been asked and answered but are venomous snakes typically immune to the bites from other venomous snakes? Does it matter if they're the same species or different?

Saw a video on this. Sometimes yes, sort of, and often no. Some snakes are only moderately resistant to their own venom or that of their species and some aren't at all. There's a lot of variability in venom even within a species regarding concentration or proportions or even tiny changes in the proteins.

I hesitated to post a dead coral snake photo but I saw earlier in the thread that killing them is ok with kids under 50 lbs in the house! It caught my eye slithering under a car and I sounded all alarms until WatchOle could come out and kill it for me.

Using a yard stick to kill a snake is brave/cold blooded.

That pic makes me want to buy a yardstick that is only 2 feet long, scaled down... that way all my fish and snakes grow by half!

For the record, there has never been a recorded coral snake fatality in texas. The ones in our region have relatively weaker venom.

Don't know a soul though that wants to find out if that's forever true

Edit - lots of terrible spelling

Can we start including location on these copper and coral finds? Need to know whether to be careful reaching down and checking my backyard pepper plants.

For the corals, it is only a concern if you separate your fingers and it bites you between the fingers. Otherwise their mouth is not big enough to puncture the skin.

Not sure if joking or not.

I have a buddy that got bit in high school. He had a pet python and king snake and picked up a coral thinking it was a milksnake. I don't think he openly tried to get bit by spreading his fingers apart.

Are they fighting or mating?
I think the males do this ritual fight over females to see who gets to mate. Question is, Is the female a copperhead or a cottonmouth? And would a cross species mating be successful?

Cottonheads! or maybe

Coppermouths!
I'm pretty sure I've said it here before, but imagine if you could breed traits in snakes like you do with dogs.

This thread would really be crazy. Coachwhip, cobra, python.

I'm more scared of the yard stick than the coral snake. Catholic school and a mom who sewed regularly taught me the reach of those things and yes, it is at least twice as long as their bodies unlike a rattle snake.

When my oldest son was born, he was really colicy for about 4 months. I wound up taking a shift holding him for most nights between 11-2am so my wife would sleep. He would cry a lot so I couldn't watch anything I need to hear well or read. I would up watching a lot of Animal Planet shows, and at 1 am, things would get weird. They had one show about Burmese and Rock Pythons escaping captivity and breeding in the wild in Florida. This was going to be a hyper aggressive super snake that would start eating children. There was no proof but they took themselves really seriously and made me laugh multiple times. (I know snakes getting loss is a real issue, but his show was just hilariously over the top).

They'll have to pry it from my cold, dead, 8 3/16 in hands.

Then I'll just have to start using a meter stick because they're not as scary looking.
