This thread got me started watching Long Way Round. I'm five episodes in and completely hooked. Can't wait to start Long Way Down.

I vote we change the death pool. Change from calendar dates to country, or latitude longitude lines (not like a specific location but anywhere along that line plus or minus 3 degrees or something. If homeboy hangs out in Morocco for 18 months we are all screwed

The total distance he needs to travel is what, 5-6000 miles? At this rate, it's going to take him 1000 days, not counting the year that he "might" take off to work (you know, it'll be easy for a soft westerner to find some work in Africa where people will work their asses off for pennies).

I think the actual number is closer to 25,000-30,000 miles. So when we ask, "is he dead yet?" the cause may actually be old age.

Couple of thoughts after watching those:
- This dude needs a "fixer" in every country he goes through (local/native to help with bureaucracy/politics)
- They had sat phones, tons of pre-planning and a staff to help as well as a support team (sometimes armed guards)
- They had tons of cash and an internationally known movie star....this idiot has a janky Jeep and Twitter.
All this to say....he ain't gonna make it

I actually heard a story from McGregor on I think it was the Graham Norton show (I can't find it right now) that when they were crossing one of the borders, he gave signed pictures of himself as a bribe and it took a while to explain who he was.
In hopes to get a leg up on you slackers I messaged the dude directly through Reddit hoping he would be dumb enough give spell out his timeline more clearly. I asked him how long he plans to stay in Morocco and his response from sometime this evening was "as long it takes to see everything good." Which to me means the dude is already on a boat back but in actuality I think means his two year time frame is out the window for sure, he is going to need a second a third and probably a 4th jeep, and that gringo better start working on his tan before someone makes a Broadway play about him.

So I binge-watched Long Way Round and Long Way Down over the last few weeks.
First: holy crap! I want to plan and drive a motorbike adventure trip like that!
Second: there was a moment that really struck me during Long Way Round: the difference between the last stretch of road into Madigan and the "bad" roads in upstate Alaska just a few hundred miles away. It was night and day. The availability of (everything) compared to meager food and housing options. What an absolute shock.

I was also shocked at home much prettier Alaska was. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Unfortunately when I went there it was an extremely flat part of Alaska working at a location that looked like the surface of mars.

He's treating this more like a vacation than a journey like the Long Way Round guys did. I can't say I blame him, Morocco is going to be one of the nicest and most interesting places on his journey.
He is going very slow. This may take a decade.
