The folks that took a trip through the Congo had difficulties finding diesel. They usually had to settle for very poor quality fuel and that was if they were lucky someone wasn't trying to swindle them. On several occasions, locals would try to sell them "diesel" but it was obviously some mixture of chemicals.

I'm sure finding gas will be even harder and way more expensive.

They also had hell getting spare parts when the drivetrain on their LC broke down.

I'm kind of bummed now.

I was really looking forward to seeing his name on the list of 2016 Darwin Award finalists....

After the price check on petrol, his limited range (by design no less), his lack of cash, and his sheer lack of forethought and planning I don't see him making it past a drive-in screening of "Out of Africa" in Spain

And, Dan has changed his route:

Hi Eric,
Thanks very much, I really appreciate that.
The map there is extremely provisional, and I don't expect to follow that route at all. I'm getting advice from people (like you!) and will go where you tell me to. Mozambique is now on the list, thanks to you!
-Dan

Oh, the irony:

Check out what "Dan" is reading right now according to his website:

Can't figure out why they get such poor lifetimes out of their vehicles.

This thread has got me in the mood for palm oil stew, groundnut stew and some palm wine. I just ordered some genuine West African palm oil (thanks Amazon!)

Hopefully the internet recipes for palm oil stew are true to this version:

Although I may find it difficult to reproduce the particular flavors of this ingredient:

Also, just in case we lose perspective on where this guy is headed, here's some random "sheds" I found in the bush.

I bet these guys would like to take that Jeep for a joyride.

Now some of the A-Chemist stories make perfect sense - you'd need a gut built like a boxcar to fade the effects of that dish even reasonably well in country

The stew looks great.

I'll go wander around down by the Trinity and send you the finest sun dried gar I can find. That might get close.

The stew was great. Burned going in and coming out, and it's appearance changed little.

Let's face it...when you go from West Virginia to the jungles of Africa, the only real difference in cuisine is the condition of the roads the ingredients were found on.

Between work and a little free time, I've finally finished reading about his Congo trip. I don't know anything about Africa (nor will I pretend to) but if this other knuckle head goes anywhere near the places Frederick went he's screwed. Poor guy better get in shape quick with the amount of times he'll end up stuck.

I still have my doubts about him and personally do not think he will follow through with it.

Let's assume he gets 12mpg. He plans to travel 80,000 miles which would require about 6,667 gallons. If he can buy it for $5 a gallon that is $33,335 just for fuel. Most of you are saying that credit cards a worthless over there. How much cash is he traveling with?

I just finished the Congo thread this afternoon -- the number of times it took both people to get past an obstacle, that reason alone is why jeep guy fails in fantastic fashion

I finished the Congo thread yesterday. what was truly amazing to me was that LC was not only not new and had a crap ton of miles on it from their other trips but that he knew some things like the gears in the rear end were sketchy going into it and he rolled the dice anyway. That road trip was nothing short of amazing.

Frederik was willing to drive slow and dig himself out and had the knowledge of how to do that. I'm betting jeep boy would bury it in a bog or sand pit 10 miles in and just say "**** it" was walk away.

You want a Congo vehicle- you should have seen the beast LC that AC's BIL sold earlier this year. It was set up for and had logged Overlanding miles, South America maybe.

Post up that eBay listing AC.

So let's recap:

He made it to Belgium with his Jeep

Driving across Europe to get to Africa

1) going to attempt drive a Jeep across Africa

2) Jeep parts are not readily available

3) His engine uses gasoline, not diesel

4) does not have an available supply of gasoline or storage capacity

5) If he can find gasoline I'm guessing $10/L

6) He is broke and living on credit

7) Africa requires cash, no ATMs or credit card machines outside of very large tourist cities

8) He doesn't have a set route yet

9) He is going to need to get the necessary travel documents and visas for each country

10) No clue how to get through roadblocks or negotiate "fines"

11) No travel companion

12) No network or resources to ask along the way in country

I'm sure there are more, but that's just off the top of my head

I picture this guy's head being substituted as a set of truck nuts, but substitute truck for bicycle.

Just trying to picture where his head would be placed.

Under the bike seat, or over the handle bars?

I was told under no circumstances to use credit in Sierra Leone. If I needed more cash, I cashed a check at the US Embassy in Freetown.
