Yeah I saw that. While they tried not to, they did have to spend some nights in the bush. I would have wanted some form of protection at that time. He admits that scared the crap out of them for fear of being caught out in the open at night.

Between reading and working, I don't have a clue where the day went. I'm only on page 19, but wow what a story.

If this guy takes his jeep anywhere near stuff like this, no way he'll make it through it.

His Congo trip is one of the best adventures I've read in a long time - it's like reading tales of Dr Livingtson and Stanley only with no guns no resources and nothing to back you up but your own moxie - and at a time when the native Africans have plenty of reasons to not be so friendly

Like others, I was up until 1:00AM Sunday morning reading the amazing Congo story. Although they had a lot of experience before getting to Congo, they were just as, or possibly more, nuts than the guy with the Jeep. On a whim they decide to drive between two Congolese cities that no one had driven in decades. Although they had a few contacts and some information for the first half of the trip, they had no clue of road conditions (or even if a road existed) or if they could cross two large rivers for the second half. I liked how they were able to get past a lot of checkpoints and bribe requests just by acting crazy.

Since they were able to make it through Congo, perhaps the idiot with the Jeep might be mad enough to complete his trip?

Remember his diesel engine gave out on him on Jeep #1. I have no clue where he is getting petrol in Africa.

He does have that extra tank around his spare that holds 13 gallons! That won't be enough?

He was writing about how with the 13 extra gallons, his range is about 600 miles.

Yeah, on the highway. Africa's autobahn isn't exactly the same quality as Germany's.

You can buy petrol in varying sizes containers from entrepreneurs along major roadways. Popular sizes are 20 oz and 2 L soda bottles. I'm sure it's perfectly safe. The petroleum has varying colors. Again, I'm sure it's fine.

But that was in a Toyota. He has a Jeep.

He expects to get 600 miles per fill up, but he will likely get 250-350 miles of range from his ~35 gallons.

All this assumes he never idles the engine for a little AC so he can sleep from time to time.

He's screwed if the price to get his jeep out of customs kept, "going up for no reason". He won't make it past the first palm he has to grease
