I have been driving for 37 years and have never done this, nor has it ever occurred to me to do this.
I just assumed he was driving a standard transmission. In that case, leaving it in gear is better than leaving it in neutral (although if my ebrake wasn't working, I'd have something to chock the wheels on the seat next to me).
But yes, people who do this in an automatic are morons.
Edit: Yup, he's driving a
6-speed manual transmission. Leaving it in first was the right thing to do, but relying on that alone was stupid.
As fast as he claimed it rolled away, I think it must have slipped out of gear.
Also, he sure seems to freak out a lot about his jeep on its side. When you read the account of the couple that did a real overland trip, the number of times they rolled over on really rough roads is almost comical, and it barely phases them:
