ER nurse sister in law says it's mild. Lots of people showing up with positive but they send them home.

Basically nothing more than normal ER hooligans who showed up before COVID because they have a sprained ankle and want a warm place to stay and free dinner. She admits though by next weekend will be the story if there is one.

I'm surprised 20% is all. In my circle / neighborhood think we are at 80% positive rate. I think for every 5 people I know in the neighborhood 3 have it.

I must be in some kind of extreme bubble. I know of one person who has gotten it in the last few months and she has it right now.

I know 10-12 families in my little burg that "missed" Xmas. Most are vaxxed and boosted and many only tested because they were going to be around family or were exposed, not because of symptoms.

Now add my father in law, that got it on a cruise (they all had to be tested and vaxxed to go), who has very mild cold/allergy symptoms.

Why are we even still talking about this thing?

Six of our family/friends that had Christmas night together are positive, including me. I also had it in September (unvaccinated). Mild symptoms for all and all doing better after a day or two. Glad I tested positive the same day they took the quarantine time down to five days.

"Parkland Memorial Hospital's emergency room saw 997 patients on Tuesday, a one-day record for the hospital"

DMN Link

Quote:

Dallas County reported a five-day total of 5,371 new coronavirus cases and 19 new COVID-19 deaths Wednesday. ....

The county's average number of new daily cases over the last two weeks is 837. For the previous 14-day period, the average was 342.
This is why we are still talking about this. I'd recommend against having a bad car wreck or heart attack right now.

Numbers without context are just numbers. Are we sure every one of those people is in dire straits? I doubt even a large majority of them are. Parkland is generally populated by uninsured who cannot visit a nearby Urgent Care or any other mainstream doctor.

A hospital wants to operate at 100% capacity. No one has been truly overwhelmed throughout this entire thing. That talking point needs to be put to bed like the rest of this garbage.

Did you know that hospitals were overrun with flu each season for years on end? We should shut the rest of the economy down just to be safe each winter.

So by your logic we'll always be talking about this. It's not going away, and counting/reporting/freaking out about daily cases is still pointless. People are getting tested more than ever now, even without symptoms and tripled vaxxed.

The hospitals are not full, that is pure trash. Even according to Clay Jenkins patients with covid are 1/3 of what they were this summer.

Chicken or the egg….

Are ERs full because we have scared people to death for the last 19 months thinking they will die with COVID?
Or are ERs full because COVID is killing everyone and they really need emergent treatment?

I think it's the former obviously and now people go to the ET with syndrome from the common cold becuase of lack of tests or tests results.

So again, are people going to the ER to get tested because they can't find tests or because they tested positive?

Also we are 1 month into the latest spike and deaths are trending down still.

Parkland saw 997.

Total admits in the DFW TSA were 412.

ERs are full because lots of doctor's offices are closed this week so they go to the ER.

Too many people used the ER as their primary care doctor before covid. And now we've unnecessarily scared the absolute **** out of people into using it even more

This is true. With the cold weather coming this weekend expect numbers to go up still.

Hospitals are close to full, but not because of Covid. It's the uninsured and not so fortunate who want a hot meal and someone to talk to.

Outside the normal reasons to not want to be in a car wreck and have a heart attack, one would get rushed care if so.

That said, if you do want to get covid. Go to a hospital. If you weren't testing positive you will after a couple hours there.

Pretty much in full agreement with you. The messaging and information from our "leaders", at every level of government, bipartisan, has been abysmal since the jump and has not improved. We'd be well served to load them all up on a big ship and set them adrift.

This seems like the right thread to add something I chuckled at on this morning's Fox 4 newscast since more DFW than Politics, and F84 would get me a ban.

Hanna Battah so eloquently reported that the positivity rate in Dallas County was 27% - "nearly 1 in 4 people who test are positive" OMG.

Now, it's been a minute (or 20 years) since I took statistics or journalism, but shouldn't the spin be "nearly 3 out of 4 people testing are wasting their time"?

Yep. Especially true of Parkland since it's county hospital. It's the PCP for the low income and uninsured. Now add in Covid fear porn and there you are.

Depends on what you're going for. That's the fun side of politics/media/sports/drama when you use math like this.

Unless you'd rather have cold-like symptoms for a few da-I mean-the latest version of covid - lets all take the simple and painless step of wearing N95 masks pretty much everywhere except the shower and bed - even outdoors.

(General RONA Talk...) The US is an interesting experiment right now. Delta is still very much around and now Omicron is roaring in. Epidemiologically, we want Omicron to win. It is wimpy and Delta packed a good punch. But our fearless leaders aren't smart enough to understand that and only look at case numbers it seems.

Hospital capacity is definitely still a concern, especially if/when a ton of staff/docs get sick, but, anecdotally, we aren't there yet.

Oh, so now masks don't work.

I guess the Omicron variant is that much smaller in size than all previous variants so it can bypass masks where others couldn't?

Trust the science.

27% is a very high number of positivity. These are mostly people who've had incidental exposure or need a negative test to travel.

You don't need a negative test to travel. This is people freaking out because of the media/politicians like Jenkins. Hospitals across the country are telling people not to go to the ER just for a test.

Um, so there are miles and miles of cars full of people traveling internationally? I don't think the rapid tests at the drive through are even valid for international travel.

And yes, I have traveled internationally multiple times the last 2 years, the US was the only country I needed a negative test to enter.
