I've never watched Yellowstone but it must have been a timber rattler. I've always understood their venom is more potent than other rattlesnakes.

In fairness, they did have him clutching his chest like a heart attack. Perhaps the combination of the bite, the scramble and Rip stomping on his chest was the cause, OB doctors

Timbers making solid comeback toward the west. This is the 3rd-4th big fat timber photo from west of I45 I've seen this year.

The pattern on the top of the head is a good indicator in this picture.

The pattern on the top of the head is a good indicator in this picture.
Yep! The "bandit mask" on the face is the best way I have heard it described, but a lot of it is also the pattern and coloration of the snake.

As mentioned above the "bandit mask" is a big tell but the color and pattern are dead giveaways that it's a rat snake. Bull snakes tend to have a lot more open space (or smaller blotching) in their pattern than rat snakes. Their color is generally lighter too. Bull snakes and western diamond backs look very similar to a lot of people…

I'm honestly not that great at explaining snake IDs - I just spend much of my childhood reading about them or catching them. Most of it is just memorization.

Yes it's a juvenile. Guessing but I would say somewhere between 6-8 inches.
