I've been surprised with the color variation on coachwhips. That's a very dark one similar to one I saw recently near Kurten.

Coachwhips are easy to ID if you get a chance to look at their head, they always look pissed off. Oddly enough I have never seen one less than 4 feet long

I was hoping it was a particularly dark Texas Indigo, but after looking at all the pictures I can find you guys have it nailed as a CoachWhip

He's a pretty big sucker, so hopefully I can keep the kids from running him over on the ATVs. That picture was taken on a steel bridge across the creek - dangerous for him.

That's what I was thinking based on the pattern but his nose looked pretty normal. I also hadn't seen one red like that but looking on Google now it seems like that can be. Thanks.

They're really cool looking snakes! Regarding the red coloration - I'd say it is somewhat common because I've had quite a few people text me pictures of "copperheads" that were really Eastern Hognoses.

Edit: We also have some experts on this board that can probably elaborate further, including one that has raised them as pets.

Wife was getting firewood for s'mores and damn near seized up. I ran over to the wood pile fully expecting a copperhead and ended up giving the kids a great lesson in herpetology.
