Was just about to post that I didn't think it was rattlesnake but didn't know what it was. Maybe one of the experts can explain the difference here. I'm sure post saw the triangle head and thought it was definitely venomous.jmazz said:

Didn't let these go today. 4 rats already dead in the netting and a small rattlesnake we dispatched.
This is why so many posters on here, myself included, don't encourage head shape to be the sole identifier of venomous/non-venomous. Way too many snakes will flatten their heads to make them appear to be triangular, like the pit vipers they're imitating.Patriarch said:

The good news is that most non-venomous snakes that will not flatten their heads unless provoked. The bad news is that most of the time people can actually see the snake, they've either fled or are in a defensive posture...

Also, in your picture you can actually see the vertical lines on the jaw (bottom jaw on your image). I refer to them as lip stitches. Those vertical lines, on Texas snake species (actually nationwide), let you know it's non venomous.

I know rats, copperheads, and corals. Cottonmouths and all the different water snakes give me fits!
For the folks still learning (me!) what is the major difference between YBWS/Blotched WS and this? My first thought when I saw it was yellowish stomach and vertical lines on mouth so it was a water snake. Thanks.CSTXAg92 said:

The pattern on a rat snake will jump out at you. Do an image search for "rat snake" and you should see that emerge.
One of the things that helps me with identifying rat snakes is when you see the full body, they seem to always look like a kinked hose.

That's great! I always think it looks like they've swallowed a whole bunch of small eggs (and who knows, maybe they have).
