Probably a Texas Spiny lizard, but could be an eastern fence lizard. I'm not great at distinguishing between the two when they are that size. 12f is infinitely better at lizards. I defer to him.

The pic where it is reaching across the fork in the tree is the best for ID. You can see the taper behind the head is very pronounced. In smooth greens it is less pronounced. Also rough green snakes are larger, more arboreal, less brightly colored and less "shiny/glossy" looking than smooth greens. Also rough green snakes are much more common in Texas and have much larger range here.

Honestly, if you just play the odds in Texas on smooth vs. rough green snake, you are gonna be right 99.9% of the time if you guess rough, but that is definitely a rough green snake.

Edited on my end, I just wanted to make sure I knew. I figured it would be re-written as such but wasn't sure.

So that's why the coral snake is the least coiled of the bunch.

Looks more like a plain bellied water snake to me, but we will see what the experts say.

The snake had to adjust it's grip when the Labs got out, grabbed ahold of it and threw it in the air. One Lab took a bite on the lip, but she seems quite proud of herself. To my knowledge, the snake got away just fine.

How do you differentiate between PBWS and YBWS?

Almost every other snake I can get or figure out but not those two.

You'd have to ask the experts on that. The yellow bellied is a sub-species of the plain bellied water snake, so I just use PBWS as the catch all for both.

At friend's house yesterday in Junction, within city limits. 2 yr old was in the yard at the time and had actually walked up to toy lawnmower but did not push it!

It's Nerodia erythrogaster so essentially yes, but I think most people would call that one a blotched water snake.
