Bass fishing was an epic failure this morning but I did get to snap a few pics of this guy. Diamondback water snake. Buda, TX

They are inquisitive. We shadowed each other for about 10 minutes checking each other out.

Very strange coloration, but I'm 99% sure that is a cottonmouth. Where was that taken?

It is unquestionably venomous... If it's not within U.S. borders it could be a few things. Otherwise it is a cottonmouth or cottonmouth hybrid.

That would be the most likely hybrid, but it looks more like a strange color morph of a cottonmouth to me.

I would bet on strange color morph of a non-hybrid cottonmouth.

What makes you so sure? Not questioning just curious. I broad banded water snake with the coloration on first glance. I thought the triangular head so a misnomer.

The scale above the eye, dull color to the scales, relatively thin neck to head in a snake showing no sign of agitation, obvious eyebrow ridge, heavily keeled scales... Really it's a combination of factors. The pattern is reminiscent of a juvenile cottonmouth as well with a bit of strange variation.

Was sitting in a chair for 20 minutes watching my dog out back, then looked to my right and saw this guy curled up staring at me from 5 feet away underneath the wheel of this trash can.

Got him with a pellet gun to the head. Hate these sneaky little dudes in my yard.
