To be fair while I was working in Nepal years ago I was stopped by the Maoists Insurgents and was told I had to pay a tax which I did. They wrote me a receipt that I could give to the other maoists in the region in the event that I was stopped again. Very polite men with guns.

I am again shocked and disoriented to whip past another dead body in the ditch on the side of the road. Much like the last one, this person appears to have been struck by a car, possibly a few days ago. Again, nobody stops or seems in the least bit concerned.

A military man stands in the middle giving vague directions, and when I misinterpret his waving, he gets extremely angry at me for coming inside the sandbag area.

We are impressed and more than a little skeptical to hear the hotel has a "sound proof" generator, and are assured we don't need to worry that our windows open directly onto the concrete yard with the generator. The toilet does not flush, the "hot shower" is freezing cold and the shower head is broken, though none of that seems to matter in the least. We are inside the compound and there is a soft bed.

Yeah, Dan. Death is everywhere in Africa. Get off the road and you'll find it.

I contemplate stopping to help, though conclude my presence can only make things worse, and there are already many onlookers doing what they can. I have been warned repeatedly traffic accidents in Africa can quickly escalate and become violent, and often any white person in the general area will be blamed.

Dan actually demonstrating some street smarts there. He listened to someone that knows something.

So you are saying messing with dead bodies in that part of Africa is a bad idea?

Typically, if you are the person to "find" and so much as move a dead body in many of the West Africa countries, you are considered to now "own" it and are responsible for the burial, etc.

Came across a decomposing body at the gate of our office in Port Harcourt. I asked the driver why it was still there and why no one had bothered to remove it (it stunk). He told me that if we (the company) did, the family would be there instantly looking for burial costs and other payments.

OB often recounts illegal hunters getting caught by posting on social media. Since Dan has his web site plastered all over his Jeep, what are the odds that a Nigerian officer might pull out his phone to visit Dan's site discovering that Dan is bragging about the great deal he got on the black market money exchange? I am sure that they would also appreciate Dan's portrayal of police as fools and his condescending attitude toward Africans in general. Does Dan's journey finally has some potential to become more interesting?

Very true, but I suspect ole Dan has probably been out of Nigeria for a week or more.

Did we determined whether Dan was actually posting at a later time or if he sets up several entries to automatically post on a predetermined time? If the later, Dan could be dead or in a Nigerian prison and still be posting.

It is definitely on the "more" side of a week... He freaking left Nigeria and was already sitting on a beach in Cameroon 3 months ago.

There is a post from a real overlander that met him in Cameroon and posted about it on Feb. 28. Discussion in back on page 76.

I just went back and reread the other overlanders post about Dan... They edited out everything other than meeting an australian at Six Mile. Glad I quoted it for posterity.

I wonder how scared Dan got when someone posted his near real time whereabouts.

yes. when he first started, he had a "friend" named emily riding with him. She had a website with her own pictures posted. The pictures still had the EXIF data (metadata: shutter, camera brand, aperture, date, etc). Her photos were over a month old compared to when he was posting "in real time."

He's writing up his articles as he goes along, then posts a month or so later when he was internet access.

EDIT: Forgot about the Cameroon article. Yeah, so he's delaying his posting by even longer now.

A few observations:

If you are commenting on reddit, the moderator gives this message to any questions about Dan's impending doom.

Be nice. Keep the negative color commentary to yourself. Every global traveler will tell you things overseas, especially in places like Africa, are not as bad as the western media portrays them to be. So you're unfounded comments and faux-astonimshment have no place here.
Consider this your final warning. Make comments like this again and you'll be banned.

At least one poster also takes up for him.

Also, from back on pg 76:

The other overlanders:
Some of them were a Swedish couple with two kids - Are we there yet? That sounds 0 fun
,a German couple in a huge overland vehicle
a Swiss couple,
the 5 motorcyclists from Holland, This sounds kinda awesome tbh
the American couple on motorcycles driven from Alaska, Same, motorcycling sounds better (except for the camping part)
a Hungarian couple (needed a Namibian visa obtained in the home country even though their was no embassy there), That seems like God telling you to go home, but then again, so does a bloated dead body on the side of the road.
a South African/British couple, the hot-air balloonists form England, THIS SOUNDS AWESOME. WHERE DO I FOLLOW THEIR BLOG/BECOME THEIR FRIENDS AND GO ON HOT AIR BALLOON ADVENTURES WITH BRITISH PEOPLE?
and at Six Mile an Australian (still with no Angola visa) Dummy.
and a German couple traveling together in separate vehicles. This is insane to me. Like the worst roadtrip ever. Why would anyone think that is fun?

A three month visa is the same price as a one month visa, and paying in Naira is by far the cheapest due once again to the black market exchange rate.
it's like he gets a little thrill from saying that over and over

this must be his new companion

Quote:

Completely randomly we bump into Liza and Peter of the Afi Mountain Drill Ranch (https://www.pandrillus.org/contact/faq/) a conservation project for Drill monkeys and Chimpanzees we are planning to visit next. After realizing who we each are, Liza and Peter immediately invite us to their place for the afternoon to check out what they have going on
so, is he bragging that his reputation precedes him, or that they had prior communication about scheduling a visit and just happened to run into each other?

Quote:

I ask the young driver of a rick-shaw, thinking I know where the place is, who happily agrees to take us for peanuts.
still bragging about throwing his black market money around like a baller

Quote:

When we eventually find the place just before dusk, I pay him three times his original asking price, and he is visibly moved at this, saying thank you a hundred times.
and then brags about being a good tipper

Help me understand why you internet hot shots hate this guy so much? I don't own a jeep, never been to Africa, but it sounds like a cool adventure.

do you have a real beef with him and what he is doing, or are you just being internet tough guys?

Because he started out by lying about his plans. He claimed he was going to do it solo...but people figured out pretty quickly he was travelling with a companion. Then he made a bunch of dumb mods to his jeep...which is a dumb vehicle to choose for that trek...then was a smartass to people giving him really good advice about those poor decisions. Then he started reusing photos with different captions...and acted surprised and disappointed in many things that everybody knows go on in africa. The list goes on and on...

1. he's the kind of traveler that gives Americans a bad rap.
2. he seems to have a thing for poverty porn. Hes taken lots of photos of impoverished people like he was in a damn Zoo.
3. he has played up the noble saviour role
4. He was woefully unprepared and down right stupid about planning
5. He complains about overpaying or paying bribes and expects the economic system to mirror the u.s.
6. Hes generally insufferable

7. He's got an off road vehicle and never goes off road. My kia could have made the trip so far and would have been a lot more comfortable
8. Hes lied about a lot of stuff
9. He's made it seem like he is in more dangerous or difficult situations than he really is. He acted like he was risking his life in Morocco

Since he's from Australia speaking with an Australian accent....It seems there is little chance of this....

As for the rest of your list, sounds like you're trying pretty hard to have a beef....

The biggest issue is that a lot of us read the thread posted here:
https://texags.com/forums/34/topics/2752920/replies/46422455

So, we all expected something similar where this guy would actually go on an African adventure... Not this *****-footing around. It's a difference of expectations, but Dan's descriptions did make it out to be a more grand adventure than he has taken so far...

Got it....

Just to make sure that I am 100% here....

We've got an 81 page thread devoted to a guy who we don't like because he promised a big adventure (that we are damning for 81 pages) and is falling short of our moral standard for adventures/adventurers...

Right?

Just want to make sure that I am hanging with the right mob and carrying the right pitchfork!!
