I don't blame him, I'd rather be hanging out on a beach than traveling down some dirt road fighting mosquitoes, coke bottle gas, and a population of desperately poor Africans.

Couldn't he have used a stick to guage how deep it was?

I wish he wouldve gotten stuck five minutes after posting that,
...and then a large carnivore attacked him while he tried to figure out his "Warn winch", all while the camera-person screams at it uselessly

ala this lovely gem

I think most of us would agree. It's just that danny-boy here made this out to be some Grand African adventure.

and a link to the pictures of the modded Jeep and a short description of what he's done to it. http://imgur.com/a/OLK3o

While certainly cool, he plans on doing this unarmed and with no escort. My question is, how long into his trip until he's murdered in his sleep or carjacked at gunpoint?

Here's the route he plans on taking.

Spent some time in Freetown, Sierra Leone, several years ago.

Would highly, highly advise against this trip.

That link is the most annoying video I have ever seen. 'When liberals move to Alaska'.
The only reason I kept watching was hoping the bear would come shut that ***** up.

Serious question, is there really a person (over the age of 9) on this planet who has not seen a white person? It's not like he has that Jeep some place a Land Cruiser cannot go. They may not see many white people, but, I'm sure they see one on occasion.

I went many places in Sierra Leone where I was quite the spectacle. I am quite certain I was the first white person ever in some of the Ebola villages.
I believe it. I went to China where there are literally a billion people and as a tall white guy was like some unicorn.

Same here. Showed kids a camera for the first time, seeing themselves on the screen was a trip.

Met plenty of folks who had never seen a Caucasian before.

Not to derail but we met a third grade girl in Kansas City who had never seen a white woman in person. She wanted to touch my wife's hair. Weird world.

And this moron needs some consequences, otherwise this is getting really boring.

My mom was born and raised in Ireland. When she was 16, she went to Dublin and saw a black person for the first time. Said that she couldn't stop staring. It was the first non-white person she had ever seen.

Guy has been going for 7-8 months and only has 7,000 miles of his 80,000 mile journey complete? It's a relatively easy part of the journey that he's completed by the way. can't wait to see him pick up the pace in the sub Saharan Orr of the continent

In College Station, an African man joined our church congregation and said that when he sent photos home, his mother couldn't believe that there were white Lutherans.

Wait... they thought Luther was a black man? Did the missionaries leave out the protestant reformation part of the story?

The Nigerian version Luther's story was that he nailed his 95 theses to the door while holding a fish on his head.

We're Presbyterian mission co-workers in Zambia; we have Baptist missionary friends here. He said he visited a village where they were doing a church plant, and everyone ran when they saw him because the last vazungo visitors had been there to perform circumcisions.

Something is very, very wrong on this continent, and it's taking me a long time to get to the bottom of it. Generations of white people giving things for free has had a very detrimental impact, and now in many places people hell out "White man, give me something", as a greeting. It is funny for a while, but gets old very, very fast.
Pretty sure Dan asks for freebies (i.e., "donations") on the reg also. Pot, kettle, black. But, remember, Dan, the road chose you.

Such a fraud.

Thanks, AC, for keeping up with Dan. Apparently he is not dead yet.

Does Dan do any research? Bukina Faso is notorious for its forced labor (slavery) of women and children. Especially child slave labor in gold mines.

When he finally gets to take is Jeep off a paved highway, he gets nervous and goes back. I was hoping that he would have become lost. I wonder how many miles (yards?) he actually drove on the narrow dirt road?

Then Dan gets upset because he made a deal with one guy, who did what he was hired to do, and he gave that guy's money to someone else, who apparently was collecting for a charity to help children? It seems like Dan caused the entire conflict himself. He is just too thick-headed to realize it. Nothing in his description looks like bribery, but rather Dan falling for over aggressive sales methods (because he was too tired from driving a few minutes on an I paved road).

He's not entirely wrong. I don't remember who it was that wrote the book or essay or whatever pleaing with Americans to stop trying to help because it cripples Africa from actually going through the industrial revolution that they need.

This isn't what I'm thinking of but here are examples.

Ive spent several years volunteering and hunting in Africa...I understand his gripe. My points are that 1) he is part of the problem; and 2) he is complaining about the relentless solicitation for donations, gifts, sponsorship--the same solicitation that he takes part in to fund his own personal odyssey.

He's too dense to realize his own hypocrisy and the irony of the situation.

If they do industrialize can you imagine just how much they will f*** the environment?

I should probably go see that continent before they destroy it completely.
OnlyForNow

One thing I've always said... doesn't matter what Americans do when China and Africa have basically ZERO environmental regulations compared to us. Their populations and potential impact to the global environment is more important than the mostly localized issues we cause.

Apologies for the detail, but imagine what happens when Africa turns on the lights.
