They know who it is. If they didn't they would put the picture out to the public to id him in like 5 minutes.
If they have the gun, they know who it is registered to. Combined with the video evidence, I'm sure it's just a matter of determining where he might have gone.
Sigh. When will people realize there's no big registration system out there for firearms? FBI can do their FBI thing and try to track from seller to seller, but there's no place they can all go be looked up. Even for those only sold by an FFL to a single individual, that never changed hands again.
I was an FFL for a decade. You're partially correct. Last statement is more nuanced. If it's a brand new gun never sold before, and you buy it and never sell it, the feds will find you. They'll go manufacturer> distributor> selling FFL and the 4473 will give you away.
If you buy a used gun from an FFL, there's less of a trail since they'll have to go to the original owner and start tracing from that point. Private party sales are nearly untraceable.
