Or it could be as simple as he tried to leave with the gun but there were people in the woods and he didn't want to be seen holding a rifle-shaped towel so he quickly ditched it.

Also the "Confessors" who for whatever reason decide to call in and claim to be the shooter themselves. Listened to a documentary that shared audio of the people who did this during the D.C. Sniper attacks. Crazy stuff.
That's also likely why broadcast media has stopped taking calls from listeners when things like this happen. There are some sick individuals who will call in only to prank the host.
