That was in the book. in the tv series, Catelyn is pissed that Ned goes to KL while Bran is still comatose. It was Luwin that convinced him to go.

America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive.

Cibilo is right. I just watched the scene in which they get the letter from Lysa. Catelyn tries to get him to stay.

Either way, I still hate her.

Show Cat is much more tolerable than Book Cat. I actually like Michelle Fairley.

Her kidnapping Tyrion turned everything to ****. Then she releases Jaime. Both of which were idiotic decisions based purely on emotion with little thought about the ramifications of her actions. I despise her character (granted, less so in the show than as portrayed in the show).

She must be fekking miserable in the books.

Yeah, she kind of is. Definitely my least favorite chapters, though it may not be so for everyone.

In the books she is the one who pushes Ned to be Hand and seems kind of starstruck about it, Ned couldn't care less but feels it is his duty. He really doesn't want to go. Last episode they also added the scene with her regretting how she treated Jon Snow which isn't in the books. The storyline there is Jon is much more sent to the Wall and taking advantage of Jon's naivate. Ned knows he can't leave Jon at Winterfell with Cat so it is more of a way of both protecting him and keeping peace in his family due to Cat's hatred of Jon.

Then you have her stupid decisions one after the other that are in the show. At least there you have a very strong actress in Fairley.

It's pretty obvious GRRM does.

That's actually a good point I was thinking about the other day. Aside from Arya, all his female characters seem to be either incompetent (catelyn), weak (Sansa, although she's in an impossible situation), or awful (cersei). Arya is awesome though, at least.

I think Dany has proven to not just be some worthless babe in the woods.

I forgot about Dany, but will let the topic rest. One way or the other, it may be seen as a spoiler. If anyone wants my posts deleted, let me know.

"Seem to be" is the important part of your post. The story marches on...

Plenty of his male characters are just as bad. He's an Equal Opportunity character creator.

That last point of me thinking got me thinking about this point too. Bran is a decent enough character. Jon has some integrity, although his moral character has superseded intelligence more than once. Ned was a Nobel character. Tyrion is awesome. Sam has integrity, and is overall a good person, but is a coward as his primary flaw. Tywin is a devious *******, but the show has still made him a likeable character. And joff is an evil sob.

I think that Brienne might be the best female character in terms of representing the sex in a good way.

A decent mix, but I'd say that he definitely trends towards making the male characters stronger overall.

Some weak kings with some serious character flaws. Plenty of interesting female characters. If the men seem more powerful, it's likely due to the mysogonistic medieval society the story takes place in.
WoMD
How long do you want to ignore this user?
True enough. Maybe they just seem to dominate the story more in more obvious ways.

sansa seems to be coming into her own. several of the hoers are competent. then there's the butch one that had jamie, can't remember her name right now...

i don't think he's misogynistic, just writing characters. Dany is probably the best character in the show, now that Ned is dead. Robb's wife is probably the most noble of ALL the characters.
WoMD
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I like Brienne as well.

And noble, hooking up with Robb knowing that he is betrothed to another. Yes, very noble...

Actually, I really like the Tyrell women, Margery and her grandmother introduced last episode I think. I forgot about them, but I think their characters are brilliantly portrayed and very strong women. So I take back my original comments.

Did anyone else think this episode was extremely comical.

Ex: shuffling around the chairs at the exec meeting
Hot pie and the wolf bread
Pron popping his chair then the dirty details afterward
robs wife talking and eating kids on a full moon
Oh Tully missing the flaming arrows

Not complaining just seemed very comical for a GoT

I appreciate how the writers are able to use some humor to demonstrate important plot points about the characters in subtle ways. The Blackfish is a badass, as the Hoster Tully funeral boat scene shows. Also, go back and rewatch the Small Council scene again. Where everyone eventually sits is very important, although it was done for laughs.

WoMD, go easy on the "that didn't happen that way in the book...." comments please.

Thanks!

Actually I thought the funniest part was Sansa's complete lack of Gaydar when she was talking about how Loras gave her the red rose. That entire Tyrell ladies luncheon was awesome with Lady Oleena. I absolutely cannot wait for the scenes they have previewed with her and Tywin, that's some serious acting power.

Yeah, it'd be great if everyone just stopped talking about the books in this thread, period. Seriously, stop mentioning them. I don't understand what is so f***ing hard about that, with an entire other thread dedicated to the show with book knowledge.

Either a) no one f***ing cares about the books and thus, no one cares what you think the differences between the characters are between the book and the show or b) just because someone hasn't read the books YET, doesn't mean they won't eventually want to, so STFU even if it's seemingly as simple as "oh, this character isn't ANYTHING like it is in the book."

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but it just doesn't make any sense to me.

no you aren't. Just like last year, I've never seen such an urge for nerds to get off by "helping" us poor tv only watchers as we watch week to week. If you read one book, and are "making guesses/predictions based off what you know"....stfu. If you read all the books and are "helping us" stfu. we obviously don't want to hear the differences, similarities, reasons for things, or anything. If we wanted to, we'd read the ****ing books.

I agree with you completely.

My main thing about the "it's not that way in the book" posts is it back fired on me during last season's thread. I've read the first book and in the first book the Brotherhood Without Banners is already being discussed. So last season when The Tickler is torturing people at Harrenhall and asking about the Brotherhood and everyone who hasn't read anything starts asking questions about who Tickler is talking about I start discussing BWB thinking they aren't going to show the BWB and it's just a small side note. And then, this season, they've become big players, they're introduced in a funny scene between Thoros and Arya, etc.

The show makers have already made it clear multiple times that they're not going to go strictly in order with the books, they're merging multiple book characters into one person in the show, they're leaving certain things out, they're creating other smaller characters for continuity.....blah blah blah. So what some of the people who have read multiple books think are small, no big deal facts, may be brought into the mix at a later time in a bigger way in the shows. And vice versus.

So keep it to the show book readers!

My apologies. It was more in response to comments about GRRM's writing style (see the comments above mine) about his characters. Since he never wrote about them, I felt that those comments were misplaced. Again, I'm sorry.
I'll stop now, though.

Actually, on reading closer, I partly brought up the topic initially, so yes, my fault first. Deleted.
