It's a good practice to do a trial run when you don't need it.
- If you're breaker box is in the garage, make sure you have enough power cord to ensure the generator is running outside the garage.
- Start up the generator every couple of months to ensure it's running good.
- Label the breaker box switches you want to power during an outage.
- Do a test run to ensure those items on those switches will run effectively off the generator power.
I have 4 switches labels and tested successfully in the case I have a power outage here.

- hot water heater
- fridge
- office/internet (as I work from home)
