I had a transfer switch installed for an RV/tailgate generator to plug into. 5000w generator. I should be able to power our furnace (gas furnace) and keep our fridge running. All you really need in an event like this.

Cost about $1,100.
This is exactly what I did.

It's a good practice to do a trial run when you don't need it.

  • If you're breaker box is in the garage, make sure you have enough power cord to ensure the generator is running outside the garage.
  • Start up the generator every couple of months to ensure it's running good.
  • Label the breaker box switches you want to power during an outage.
  • Do a test run to ensure those items on those switches will run effectively off the generator power.

I have 4 switches labels and tested successfully in the case I have a power outage here.
  • heater
  • hot water heater
  • fridge
  • office/internet (as I work from home)

Getting some liquid rain here in Prosper now. Contributing to some melt as well, at least from our roof and gutters.

Where do you have the generator set up outside?

Also, how do you keep it out of the elements?

Sits in the garage. if needed, it wheels outside where the power comes into the house (other side of the breaker box) where the transfer switch is.

Crank it up, plug it in, go.

These are made to work in the elements.

Been raining and melting all morning here in north Dallas.

Over near Deep Ellum, it was lightly raining for awhile but that's stopped. It looks like it melted some of the ice on the street so better than this morning. I'm seeing 31 degrees here currently.

My transfer switch is in the garage. Plug it in and wheel it outside of the garage door. I also made a portable roof cover for it to keep it out of rain/snow/sleet even if it is made to work in those elements. I also have a heavy duty chain nearby so I can lock it to the house. Back when power went out in 2021 there were a lot of generator thefts.

Special cord for that or is it a normal extension cord, maybe a heavy duty?

Thanks for sharing.

thick gauge cord - the same as an RV cord power cord that you use these generators for.

For 30amp I think it's an 8gauge?

In addition to the generator and electrician, here are the parts you'll need.

You mean this week, or just any time? Yes I've been several times. I think it's very over rated but I'm a bbq snob. I'll just make my own bbq before going there. Not sure if they're open though if that's what you mean.

I'm a bbq snob, but their jalapeño cheese sausage is killer. No shame. Brisket isn't bad and one of the better in DFW IMO

You can check out the TXDOT cameras here: https://its.txdot.gov/its/District/DAL

Although these are static images you can at least see the condition on the pavement.

HP to N Dallas, main streets passable, mostly better than yesterday. Side streets much worse, almost all ice.

Oh, and if you're one of those people driving around with your hazards on because there's ice, thanks for alerting everyone around you that you're an idiot.
