even without a Writer's strike 3 years between seasons of a TV show is ridiculous.

Who is writing this thing, Tom Scholz?

My guess is it's a combination of scheduling for key folks, allowing Bella to age up a bit to play an older Ellie, and potentially giving some runway for Naughty Dog to work on Part 3

This is starting to feel like Covid all over again.
Except I don't see a 50 person deep line every day at the Urgent Care clinic, getting tested for Covid so they can work.

And we're down to only about 20% maskers at the grocery store.

I've had the windows open the past few days and it's just nonstop horn honking all day supporting the folks picketing at the end of my street.

That post is even funnier if you know who that guy actually is.

the worst part of the writers strike is that now everone is going to pump out crappy reality shows

No, the worst part is that Hollywood is shutting down just when they were on the road to recovery.

This becomes my problem because I'm about to list my house for sale so I can move to Texas.

I need the Entertainment industry working, not wondering how they're going to pay rent.

Compensation =/ wages. I assume there are dozens if not hundreds of writers that are paid higher wages than the Netflix executives. Pretty sure Hastings still makes less than $1 million per year.
Would the WGA be willing to receive their residuals in the form of Netflix or Comcast stock?

It was unlikely the DGA was going to strike anyway, so this doesn't come as a huge surprise. Now onto SAG, who soon begins negotiations, has less than a month to come to a deal, and *is* more likely to strike. That said…

This would actually be interesting.

I'd take my residuals on Netflix stock. I'm tired of getting checks for 89 cents.

So the episode where Jerry Seinfeld is getting checks from the Super Terrific Happy Hour for 12 cents is legit?

My neighbor worked for a Lionsgate and Fox productions in post production and film / editing.

He told me yesterday that some writers can work for 14-days on a show and be guaranteed a $150,000 salary for the year.

I don't know if that is true, but sounded wild if so.

Yes. And there is a bar in Studio City called Residuals where you get a free drink when you bring in a residuals check that is less than a dollar.

There's an entire genre of this on TikTok. Writers and actors opening their residual checks l.

Dante Basco (Rufio from Hook) does this frequently. He'll pick an envelope to see if he's eating fast food or steak dinner. He tells you the amount, shows a clip from whatever it was for, and then tells a short anecdote about filming.

It's actually really interesting.

Pretty common for actors. Not often for me. I don't do a lot of DGA shows since I mostly produce non guild tv movies. On the shows I produce that I am also the DGA UPM on I just take the credit/pay/benefits and hire a non union worker to do the job for me.

That's funny. I don't remember why, but I was looking around google maps of a part of LA one time and saw that bar and wondered if it was a writers hangout.

This doesn't mean a strike will happen, only that the membership has (overwhelmingly) "authorized" one, should management eventually decide to go on strike. SAG negotiations begin on Wednesday and will last until Friday, June 30. Only then will the actors actually go on strike, if they haven't yet come to an agreement...

Potentially interesting thought (maybe): if less publicity equates to lower marketing expenses (seems likely to me, but what do I know), what happens if Barbie et al do great business despite those lower costs? Do studios rethink their overall marketing spend at all?
TCTTS

I think you'd have to test that theory over a longer period of time, for movies haven't *already* been heavily marketed like Barbie and Oppenheimer have.
