I didn't realize the picket lines at the studios were starting a 1:30 pm today.

I live half a block from one of the major studios and about 1:45 pm, two news helicopters took up station over my house. I went outside to see what's going on and I saw the picket line at the end of the street.

They don't appear to be out in as much force as I remember from 2007 but, it's only day 1. Plenty of horn honking in support. Not quite India levels but, I'm glad I don't live any closer.

At the risk of sounding like an uneducated dummy, because I am, can anyone explain what is so sacred about the writer's room?

Also residuals sounds like a bad way to get paid. Sure they are great if your show is a hit and runs for years, but if not, you aren't getting paid. I think I'd want more money upfront then the risk of no to little residuals. And basing your residuals on subscriber count for the streaming service is just dumb for everyone.
A friend of mine went 6x Platinum in 1983 on an album that I guarantee you've banged your head to.

He drove his Ferrari down to San Diego last weekend and still has a Cannonball Run era Lamborghini Countach in his garage.

Residuals aren't too bad if you have a massive hit.

Imagine still living off of the success you had 40 years ago.
Rudy Sarzo?
Carlos Cavazzo probably.
50/50 chance but yeah, Carlos.
I've met Rudy, he's cool. Not on the same level as fellow Cuban bass player - Juan Croucier but still cool.

Straight out of 1983, enjoy:

Awesome! Metal Health was the album that got me into metal and hard rock music and still has a special place in my heart. The perfect album for an 11 year old boy in 1983.

For those interested, a fantastic, half-hour pod that explains all of this better than I ever could, clarifies a couple earlier points, and is just an all-around great overview of the situation, from someone who was in the room…

Guess it is time for another rewatch of Lost. If I watch one episode a day, can I get thru the 121 episodes before the strike ends?

Hopefully any reshoots for Masters of the Air are done. Good time to release it on AppleTV

In 2004, my office "On the Lot" was next to the sound stage where they shot Alias (Jennifer Garner) and next to where the writers offices were for LOST.

About 3 weeks after the pilot for LOST aired and we were all trying to figure it out, somebody at lunch one day said that they knew somebody whose girlfriend's uncle's cousin's brother saw Ferris at 31 Flavors and said they knew what the plot to LOST was and how it was going to end.

I took it under consideration and then ignored it. But, I waited with anticipation for every episode of the 6 seasons. And at the end... it was exactly what somebody told me at lunch in late 2004.

Extra funny was the premise of the show was the crash of a Flight between Sydney and Los Angeles.

At that point, I had no idea I was going to move to Australia, much less, fly between Australia and the USA approximately 100 times. Good times.

Oh, and random actor sightings. I did see Dominic Monaghan walking down La Brea just north of Hollywood Blvd. one day when I was driving home from LAX.

That's awesome.

Living in LA during all but the first season of Lost was such a trip. It was obviously the most popular show on TV, one that most of us were absolutely obsessed with, and a number of the flashbacks of course took place in LA, seeing as that's where the plane was heading. When the cast wasn't shooting in Hawaii, a lot of them lived in LA, and running into them in real life between seasons was never not surreal.

- Desmond and I used to work out at the same gym (Bodies in Motion on the west side). I ran next him on a treadmill more times than I can count.

- Saw Penny in the lobby at my local theater once.

- Saw Dominic Monaghan in Venice one afternoon (hanging with Billy Boyd - aka two of the four main Hobbits, which was crazy in and of itself).

- Saw Shannon and Boone - who were dating in real life - at the Beverly Hills Hotel one night.

- Then sat next to Shannon a year or so later at a BBQ joint we frequented. She was with/dating the founder of Toms Shoes, where one of my friends worked, so we chatted them up a bit.

- Sat next to Christian Sheppard at that same BBQ joint a year or so later.

- Was on a flight from Dallas to LA with Juliet, which kind of freaked me out.

- Sat a couple rows up from Richard at The ArcLight theater.

- Saw Bernard once at a grocery store in the valley.

A couple days ago I would have said no way. Now? You might very well could watch one a day before this thing is over.

I'm going to write an AI program right here on this thread to replace these self-entitled jackass writers. Check this out:

Conservatives bad, leftists good
Men bad, women good
Straight people bad, gay people good
Biology bad, "trans" people good
White people bad, brown people good
Trump and Republicans bad, haha jokes
Christianity bad, anything else good
Rich people bad, poor people good
"Climate" change, oh no fear

Now, all my program has to do is cross reference these parameters to generate combinations of plot points that will be relentlessly shoved down audience throats because the AI knows better than the stupid peasants who are watching. And abracadabra, this will account for 95% of all content generated by Hollywood, and not a single human needed to create it. I should get a Nobel prize.

I have a really hard time believing that guys like Meyers or even Kimmel have any idea what the real cost of their staff is. Aka, the Loaded Labor Rate. Maybe Fallon, I think he's probably a bit smarter and more plugged in. Loaded Labor is salary/base pay, projected bonus and OT pay/differentials, HC, taxes, penion/retirement/401k, other benefits, etc. A couple on months of covering that could get in to the millions. Easily. It's a nice thought but unrealistic.

TCTTS

You really think Fallon is more savvy and plugged in than Meyers? When, to me at least, Fallon easily comes across as the least bright, most vanilla, most spineless of the bunch. Whereas Meyers has been running staffs of writers for 20+ years now, going back to his SNL days, and is one of the most plugged in guys in all of comedy. Having run two late night shows now, I just can't see Meyers not knowing exactly how much his staff makes. Hell, even a dope like James Corden knew exactly how much his staff made, and got sh*t on mercilessly a while back for trying to convince the WGA to lift certain minimums in order to hire glorified interns instead of paying his staff what they deserved. That, and these guys make an obscene amount to host these shows, never mind all the other irons they have in various other fires.

Granted, none of this means that Meyers is going to pay everyone's full salaries for a full four months or whatever - I'm sure it'll be conditional and only cover certain bases - but it'll at least be something, and at least he's getting out in front of this/showing some empathy/solidarity. Meyers was also one of the only ones out there actually picketing, day after day, back during the last strike in 2007. So the dude literally walks the walk as well.

I'm not naive enough to think AI could replace every writer out there in Hollywood at the moment.

However, are we absolutely sure they couldn't replace late night comedy writers? Especially for Fallon?

Good for Seth Myers and whoever else for paying their writers. But Fallon shouldn't be raked over the coals for not doing so. It's not his responsibility.

This sure seems like it's coming out of his pocket.
Curious to know the tax consequences of those direct payments. Thankfully we will have many more IRS enforcement agents to make sure both sides are reporting the expense/income properly

Writing, like graphics design and art, is dead. Language models will crush it completely. Sure they aren't going to be Shakespeare but no one in Hollywood is writing to that level. Hell most of the stories nowadays could easily be written by a language model AI.

Unfortunately for the writers, they struck at the worst time and it will be pretty trivial for companies to replace them with AI written stories.

Frankly, the writers need to be pushing the AI limitations much harder, especially since they're already on strike anyway.

It sounds like the AI protection is more of a tertiary issue for the writers, but it should be front and center because it's a game changer.

There are plenty of careers which AI is going to have a major impact on, and the ability of those professions to hang on anywhere close to current participation levels depends on either their lobbying power (professionals in fields like law, finance, and medicine) or their union as in this case.

If I'm in the writer's guild I ram thru more stringent protections from AI now or run the risk of having a big chunk of those jobs eliminated by the time the deal comes up again a few years from now. The focus on compensation or working conditions is a short-term focus when they should be prioritizing the existential threat to their profession.

Yep, this should be their number one issue. In fact it should be pretty much the only major issue. This will crush them if they aren't careful.

It's already very prevalent in book such that many organizations are no longer accept proposed books because they had so many AI submissions.

Strangest thing to me about all this is studios wanting to keep streaming data secret.

I'm guessing the numbers are big enough that it would make the pay disparity even more ridiculous between cable tv and streaming.

It's obvious why, they don't want it known how poorly some shows do when those promote politically charged issues.
