I'm old enough to remember Landry killing a guy on Friday Night Lights during a writer's strike.

I fully realize that you and I pretty much can't stand each other, don't care, and surely you don't either. But if you posted that tweet as a sign you stand with the writers and other craft, I am in agreement with you.

As a conservative, I am fully in the camp that believes that way too much wealth is held at the top and by far too few. I don't ever believe that our founding fathers intended for America to reach a population of 330M+ with some 600-700 billionaires (given the market on any given day) essentially controlling the rest of us. I say this as someone that did reach the "exec" level in big corp world and can sleep at night peacefully knowing I did everything I could to get my peeps as best compensation as I could, even to the detriment of my own career. Was never good at ass kissing. Been in small business world on my own now since 2021 and will likely never go back.

I also fully get how much "support staff" actually does to make any real program or project actually work. Truthfully, most "execs" or "celebrities" are easily replaced. They're figureheads. F them. It's the rare Musk or Jobs or Favreau, that are true visionaries. And they are rare and not replaceable.

I hope the writers and related noting but the best.

Very well said, and I agree 100%. That's also cool to hear about your executive approach, and my hat off to you for going against the grain in that regard. Honestly, you and I probably aren't that far apart on this stuff, or even politically. I think a lot gets misinterpreted and projected in the noise here, which I'm as much to blame for as anyone.

I'm also not a big union guy or anything, and am not even a member myself. I just want see A) people treated/compensated fairly, and B) these corporations finally have to concede in some way, shape, or form. Granted, based on what I'm hearing, it sounds like it's not even the traditional studios who are being the staunchest, it's Big Tech - Netflix, Amazon, Apple, etc - who, being the new guys on the content block, either don't fully understand how this industry has operated for decades - or - don't care. Probably a little of both. Either way, all the better that they hopefully get a dose of reality too. It sounds like, if there's something on the AMPTP side to cause a fissure, it'll be the old guard vs. the new guard battle, which the unions can hopefully take full advantage of and exploit.

At a guess, the Amazons and Apples are against this in part because they're (allegedly) losing a ****load of money on their streaming services (largely due to circumstances within their control).

I've heard multiple stories like this now, of shows being shut down over the past couple of days due to actors or various other non-WGA crew not showing up to set, all in solidarity. If more people keep doing this, they could basically shut down all of Hollywood, this whole thing would be over by Memorial Day. That won't happen, but it's cool to see people trying (in this instance, it sounds like Paul Giamatti)…

And the Star Wars sequels, and Rings of Power, and everything in GOT after they ran out of GRRM's book material.

But tell me how AI will never be able to produce such genius as "somehow, Palpatine returned."*

*I don't disagree that AI cannot wholly replace humans in the writing room, but a huge chunk of what gets to paper can be produced by AI much more efficiently. And that's the same for many jobs: it's not that they will be erased entirely from existence, but they will be dramatically cut, which will be incredibly disruptive to society, unless protections are put in place.

I'm not sure which media companies are making lots of money. (and to be fair, media is too broad a word)
Remember when Blumhouse "disrupted" filmmaking because it was consistently profitable?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2022-11-10/media-companies-are-having-their-worst-year-in-three-decades

it took a while but I found the old piece which reminds you that Hollywood is a traditional and (small 'c') conservative place and there are plenty of gatekeepers, which include the unions, to prevent risk-taking: http://endcrawl.com/blog/film-not-disrupted-yet-part-1/

MTV Movie & TV Awards this Sunday will be without a host, writers, live audience, and possibly presenters as well and will be a pre-taped clip based show instead.

If they were truly as far apart as the tweet above suggests, I'm afraid this is going to get really, really ugly, and last quite a while. The only hope is that basically no one is on the side of the studios this go around, so hopefully they cave sooner rather than later, especially with the added pressure from the DGA and SAG negotiations next month.

DGA starts negotiating Wednesday. We will be as far apart on our terms as the writers.

Honestly... good. Because at this point, I think the only thing that keeps this from lasting well into the fall is if the WGA, DGA, and SAG all strike in solidarity, essentially shutting down all of Hollywood come July 1. Only then will the AMPTP (hopefully) be completely overwhelmed and forced to concede on multiple fronts.

As a big WoT fan, this hits too close to home. So much unused potential in that story.
So much complete lack of understanding what the story was about.
