At the risk of throwing gasoline on a fire, I actually took my three daughters to see Moana this morning. The only reason I paid the money to see it because I verified it was not littered with woke messaging. I wonder if it's success was partly due to families like mine?

"Partly" is flexible enough to say that the flick's success was partly due to your family alone, so certainly as to other families who verified the messaging was kosher before parting with $.

It's a sequel to a hugely popular Disney princess movie - easy $ for them with a baked in audience.

Saw it today with my 4 year old. She loved it. They should've given Lin Manuel Miranda whatever he wanted to come back - the music was a big step down from the first one.

That was definitely the main culprit. I'm not saying its large opening is solely due to people like me. Just curoius how much of a factor that the non wokeness had on the success. We certainly would not have gone otherwise and how much that might play into future Disney movies.

Probably just wishful thinking on my part.

Wicked's strategy of opening the week before T-giving (and being incredible) is working like - magic?

The film made $32m on Black Friday to bring its 8-day domestic total to $214m.

It is the fourth-largest second Friday in domestic history, trailing only The Force Awakens ($49m/2015); Endgame ($40m/2019) and Frozen II ($34m/2019).

Yes, on a holiday, but the biggest second Friday of 2024 - ahead of Inside Out 2 ($30.5m) and D&W ($28m).

In non-adjusted numbers, it's already the #1 live-action based on a musical of all time, Grease was the previous #1 at $181m, but Grease and particularly the Sound of Music are way ahead for inflation adjusted, although Sound of Music has been in theaters 70 billion times in the last 60 years.

For all musicals, which include a lot of the Disney Stuff. #1 on that list is Beauty and the Beast at $504m.

Wicked's low day so far is $15.778m on Monday. Over the W-F Thanksgiving sweep it made $69.4m. That's not including the destruction it will do today and tomorrow.

#1 on Friday was Moana 2 at $28m. It's up to $85m in 3 days. The original made $248m domestic and $686m worldwide in 2016. Somehow The Rock thinks people also want a live-action featuring him in 2026.

A monstrous Turkey day weekend at the box office $271m for 21 movies in 3 days.

Moana 2 goes for $135.5m to run its total to $221M in 5 days.
Wicked goes for $80m in its second weekend, down just 29% week on week, to reach $262M
Gladiator II makes $30.7m to reach $111M
Red One makes $12.9m and is up to $76M

Moana 2 at $386m worldwide. It's weekend is the 6th largest for a domestic November. #1 is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with $181m in 2022. Moana is only $27m short of the original movie's entire domestic run in 2016.
Moana's opening weekend of $135.5m is the 40th largest ever. The only animated movies to have a bigger weekend: Incredibles 2 ($182.6m), Inside Out 2 ($154m, 2024), The Super Mario Bros Movie ($146m, 2023)

At an estimated $80m, Wicked has the 16th largest second weekend in Domestic history, slightly behind Incredibles 2, which made $608m.

Seems at least plausible that Wicked, Moana 2, and Mufasa could all gun for $500m domestic.

Wicked is at $262m after 9 days, Moana 2 is at $221m after 5 days, and Mufasa comes on the heels of 2019's Lion King remake that made $543m.

Never had a year with even 4 movies make at least $500m. Deadpool 3 and Inside Out 2 are already there ($636m and $652m, respectively.)

What's come before - these are all #s unadjusted for inflation

2012: 3 > $400m: The Avengers $623m, The Dark Knight Rises $448m, The Hunger Games $408m
2013: 3 > $400m: Catching Fire $424m, Iron Man 3 $408m; Frozen $400m
2015: 3 > $400m: The Force Awakens $936m, Jurassic World $653m, Age of Ultron $459m
2016: 3 > $400m: Rogue One $533m, Finding Dory $486m, Cap 3: $408m
2017: 4 > $400m: The Last Jedi $620m, Beauty & The Beast $504m, Wonder Woman $412m, Jumanji $404m
2018: 3 > $600m / 4 > $400m: Black Panther $700m, Infinity War $678m Incredibles $608m, Jurassic World 2 $417m
2019: 3 > $500m / 6 > $400m: Endgame $858m, The Lion King 543m, Rise of Skywalker $515m, Frozen 2 $477m, Toy Story 4 $434m, Captain Marvel $426m
2021: 4 > $400m: Maverick $718; Avatar 2: $684m; Wakanda Forever $453m; Dr Strange 2 $411m

Moana 2 held off Wicked but just barely on Monday, by a $5.70-$5.64 million margin. That's Moana's 6th day and Wicked's 11th, suggesting that Wicked might be the bigger horse in the long run as the kids are back to school for another 2-1/2 weeks before they can go en masse to the movies on school nights again.

Gladiator 2 took third at $2 million. It's up to $113m and is currently 17th on the year. Doubtful to make the top 10 at this point - that spot is currently held by Kung Fun Panda 4 ($193m), but it will likely end up needing at least $196m to reach that spot after Mufasa comes out. Original Gladiator made $187m and finished 4th in 2000 behind How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Cast Away. and Mission Impossible 2.

Wicked actually outdrew Moana 2 per theater, $1,452-$1,357.

Moana has reached #35 already on digital animation movies. It's at $231m currently.
$250m will get it into the top 30, $300m into the top 20, but the going gets steep after that, $350 m gets you to 17th, and $400m gets you to 10th.

Wicked still charting $10m above the top of the Numbers opening weekend range, which very few movies do (mostly ones by James Cameron).
At $268.8m, it has passe Twisters for this year, and is closing fast on Dune Part Two ($282m) and Beetlejuice 2( $294m). It's about $38m short of entering the top 100 domestic all-time.

Moana 2 churns out $8m on a school day Tuesday, with Wicked right behind it at $6.96 million.

Moana at $239m through 7 days. Wicked at $275.8m through 12 days.

Moana climbs to 34th all-time animated domestic, passing Shrek Forever After and Brave.

Wicked up to 53rd in the interesting category of Domestic Box Office Non Sequels. Basically the first movies of a ton of franchises are in there. The only ones in the top 100 without a sequel (or one planned) are:

#4 Barbie, #8 Rogue One (I guess it counts?), #20 Passion of the Christ, #27 American Sniper, #35 Forrest Gump, #36 Oppenheimer, #46 The Sixth Sense, #47 Up, #48 Inception, #53 Gravity, #55 The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, #63 I am Legend, #64 The Blind Side, #76 Brave, #79 War of the Worlds, #81 Cast Away, #85 The Martian, #86 Signs, #87 Hancock, #89 Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, #90 Wall-E, #91 Big hero 6, #92 Mrs. Doubtfire, #94 Wonka, #96 Ghost. Interesting list.

Wicked took back the #1 spot at the BO from Moana 2 on Wednesday, outgrossing it $5.08m to $4.4m.

Wicked is up to $280.9m in 13 days.
Moana 2 at $243.8m in 8 days.

Wicked will pass Dune 2 tomorrow for #5 for 2024. It needs to get past $306m to get into the top 100 all-time domestic. It continues to chart above its opening weekend projected range of $200m-$275m.

Moana has done just the opposite. Its projected range from its opening was $250m-$272m at this point. It's dipped $7 million below the minimum. Its weekends should still crush it, but when Mufasa opens, it will drop off big time. I think that's December 20th.

Total domestic box office for 2024 is up to $7.709 billion with 715 million tickets sold.
Last year's totals were $8.935bn with 828 million tickets sold.

I have no idea what Pushpa : The Rule Part 2 is, but it debuted with $4.47 m Thursday night in the US, knocking Moana down to #3 on the day, and finishing just $309K behind Wicked for the #1 spot despite only being in 1,245 theaters.

Wicked is up to $285m and will easily cruise past $300m and into the top 100 films domestic all-time this weekend
Not sure Moana 2 will join it just yet. It's at $248m. That puts it 51st all-time for Disney movies, just behind the original Moana by about $700,000.

In 2016, when the OG Moana came out, DIsney had the #1-3, #5, #7, #11, and #13 movies at the box office - Rogue One, Finding Dory, CA: Civil War, the Jungle Book, Zootopia, Moana, and Dr. Strange.

Since then it has acquired the rights to Deadpool (#6 that year) and X-Men (Apocalypse was #17 that year).

Huge weekend at the movies. With the kids unrestricted by school, Moana 2 takes #1 easily with $52 million. Wicked is second at $34.85 m, followed by Gladiator at $12.45m, and the surprisingly plucky Red One at $7m.

The re-release of Interstellar garners $4.425m in just 165 theaters to get it to $192m domestic lifetime.
Equally impressive is the concert movie For King + Country: A Drummer Boy Christmas, which made $2.055m in 1,540 theaters.

Moana 2 and Wicked both crest $300m domestic in the process. Moana 2 is bizarrely at $300m domestic and international on its way to $1 bn +.

It's up to 21st all-time domestic animated movies, $22m behind Shrek 3 for the top 20.It's also up to 5th for the year, surpassing Beetlejuice 2, Dune 2, and Twisters over the weekend.

Wicked is up to $320.5 million and has reached the top 100 movies domestic of all time. It is currently #90.

It is also #14 all-time for Universal. let's take a minute to consider what a nice past decade Universal has quietly had at the movies.

Here's Universal's top 10 domestic grossing movies as of December 31,2014.

1. ET $439m
2. Jurassic Park $415m
3. Despicable Me 2 $368m
4. Meet the ****ers $279m
5. Jaws $272m
6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas $261m
7. Despicable Me $252m
8. Bruce Almighty $242m
9. Fast and Furious 6 $238m
10. The Lost World: Jurassic Park $229m

Now here's Universal's all-time top list as of December 8, 2014
1. Jurassic World $653m
2. Super Mario Bros. Movie $574m
3. ET $439m
4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom $417m
5. Jurassic Park $415m
6. Jurassic World: Dominion $376m
7. Minions: Rise of Gru $370m
8. The Secret Life of Pets $369m
9. Despicable Me 2: $368m

Moana 2's weekend box got revised down slightly, so it officially hit $300m on Monday, but fell back to 2nd place as the adults again pushed WIcked to the top spot.

Wicked made $3.3m to reach $325.4m domestic and is up to #87 all-time. It needs about $12m to reachthe top 75.

Moana 2 made $2.5m to reach $301.8m domestic. It is 107th all-time. To tell you how far movies (and prices) have come, when Moana 2 reaches $311m, it will push Attack of the Clones out of the top 100 domestic movies of all time. When AoTC had its final bow back in 2002, the only movies ahead of it were:
Titanic, The Phantom Menace, Star Wars, E.T., The Lion King (1994), Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, The Fellowship of the Ring, Forrest Gump, Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone.
Return of the Jedi is now ahead of AOTC because of re-releases, but back then ROTJ had finished at $309m . So in 22 years, AOTC has gone from 11th to 100th.

Interstellar continues a remarkable run in 165 theaters, making $1.057m on Monday. Since returning to theaters on December 6th for its 10-year anniversary, it has added more than $5 million to its all-time box office total.

Moana 2's #s are tardy today, so it's getting left out. Wicked jumped 39% day over day to $4.66 million, hitting $330m domestic.

Gladiator 2 also getting a nice 50% bump d/o/d and is up to $135m. Seems to be getting some nice staying power lately. It has the legs to get up to at least the top 13 for 2024, although Sonic and Mufasa will likely race right by it.

At $330.1m domestic, WIcked jumped 2017's "It" and last year's "Oppenheimer" to reach #86 all-time. it's bout $30,000 behind Forrest Gump and $250,000 behind Batman vs. Superman.

Movies to watch coming out soon for Box Office success or hilarity.

Yet another Thursday win for Wicked as we head towards the last week before school is out for Christmas break.
It made $3.02 m, ahead of Moana's $2.23 m and Kraven's $2m debut.Gladiator 2 also churned out $1.07m.

This is the part I have found I like the most for movies, when they get north of $300m and they're just churning up the domestic charts past several films a day, showing you how impressive they are.

20 days in, and Wicked is at $336m, up to #77 all time. Yesterday it passed GOTG, Alice in Wonderland, Aquaman, and Minions.
It's coming up fast on Despicable Me 4 ($361m) for #3 at the BO for 2024. That'll be its apex, Inside Out 2 ($652m) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($636m) aren't getting caught this year. It will likely finish there as well. Even with Christmas coming, it's doubtful Moana 2 can catch it, since both Sonic and Mufasa will carve up the child box office of things.

I'd also bet good money that Wicked Part 2 will have a bigger opening but likely not as big of a total box office as the first part when it comes out next year. The story is good, but there's nothing to match Defying Gravity in the second part IIRC.

Moana 2 fought back to #1 on Friday by a slim margin, with $6.003m to Wicked's $5.82 m.

Kraven the Hunter made $4.7m total in its opener across 3,211 theaters on Thursday/Friday with Gladiator II at $2.175m and War of the Rohirrim at $2m. It's only got a 52% Rotten Tomatoes score and mixed reviews

Wicked has reached the top 75 domestic movies of all time at #74 with $342.4m. It's still in the phase where it's passing several films a day, which will continue until it gets above $380m, where there start to be much bigger gaps. The current #50 is GOTG 2 at $389m

Moana 2 is officially into the top 100 at #96 with $316m. Next up for elimination from the top 100 is 2010s Ironman 2 at $312m.

Rohirrim lands 5th at $4.6m. I guess pretty good for anime, but not good for the brand. Going to see it next weekend with the kids.

Wicked sheds 196 theaters, Moana 2 already 200, surprisigly.
Wicked continues to have the smaller dropoff - only 38% down from last weekend; Moana at 48%.

Gladiator 2 makes a solid $7.8m to finish 4th and reach $145m.

Wicked up to $359m, good for 66th all time, passing Thor 4, The Two Towers, American SNiper, Transformesr Dark of the Moon, Furious 7, 2019 aladdin, Inside Out, and GOTG3 in the past hree days. It will pass Despicable Me 4 on Monday for 3rd place in 2024.

Moana 2 #2 at $1.79m, then Gladiator 2, then That's So Kraven.

Wicked 2 charts past $500m worldwide, it has not much international appeal, and has jumped Despicable Me 4 for both #3 in 2024 and #65 all-time domestic.

Moana 2 up to $339m, good for 76th all time. Moana 2 up to $719m worldwide. That's 134th all-time, jumping Fast 9 on Monday. Moana 2 still needs to make another $19m to crack the TOP 30 all time for domestic Disney movies. If you ever want to see a list that melts the other theaters' brains, it's this one.

Following the 2 new releases, it was WIcked #3 at $2.46m, Moana 2 #4 at $1.87m and Gladiator 2 4th at $800K. Kraven falls to 6th in just a week.

Gladiator 2 will hit $150m domestic on Friday. It's made $400m worldwide. If it can get to $193m it can get i the top 10 for 2024, but that doesn't seem likely unless it does some big Christmas biz.

Moana 2 is up to #5 for 2024 at $345.97m. It's up to $725m. My kids said they wanted to see it, but we sa WIcked instead, and now nobody cares about seeing it. It's up to #73 domestic all time and #17 all time domestic digial animation.

When Jesus Christ woke up this morning, he saw Elphaba in his rear view mirror. Wicked is up to $370.4m domestic, right behind Passion of the Christ at $370.8m for 58th place.

Wicked is starting to put up some interesting #s as its staying power continues that I believe will really see some waves made over the next 2 weeks with Christmas.

Its 4th Tuesday which was last week was the 26th largest ever.
Its 4th Wednesday was 24th largest ever.
Its 4th Thursday (yesterday) was 35th biggest ever.

It seems like there's going to be very little crossover between the Sonic/Mufasa audience with Wicked, so I thik you can definitely see Wicked piling up some box office in the next 2 weeks and pushing well past $400m.

Sonic 3 cranks out $25.75 m for its Thursday/Friday showcase. The first film opened with $58m on its way to $148m domestic The sequel made $72m on its way to $190m.

Mufasa a distant second at $13.3m. Not sure how you call this movie live action, but that's what the websites say. As such, it stands to be Disney' worst "live action" opening weekend since either Malefiicent 2, which made $36m in 2019 or Dumbo which made $45m the same year.

An interesting note as we move to the holidays, Wicked beat Moana 2 head to head on a Friday for the first time since both have been out. Moana has won all the weekends and Wicked all the week days.

But Wicked won $3.72m to $3.3m. Newcomer Homestead made $2.95m, Gladiator made $1.25m to reach $150m domestic.

Fascinating last few days.

Sonic easily won Monday with $9.375m, followed by Mufasa at $7.08m, Wicked at $4.675m and Moana 2 at $4.144m.

On Christmas Eve, it was Sonic by an eyelash, $7.5m to $7.16m over Mufasa.

On Christmas Day, when the whole family goes to the movies, Mufasa destroyed the competition with $14.7m, followed by newcomer Nosferatu at $11.5m, and Sonic down to third at $10.35m. A Complete Unknown was 4th debuting a t a very strong $7.2m, followed by Wicked at $5.399m and Moana 2 at $4.257m. $60.78m total for Wednesday's box office.

Wicked's $5.399m is the second most EVER on a 5th Wednesday, trailing only Frozen's $6.354m recorded on Christmas Day 2013. Ironically, Wicked ($397m) is right behind Frozen ($400m) on all-time domestic, and likely passed it on Thursday.

Mufasa makes it 2 wins in a row with a big $12m on Thursday and has reached $76m. Sonic is second at $11.55m and is just shy of $100m.
Nosferatu third at $7.6m, followed by a landmark day from Wicked of $6.889m and Moana 2 is 6th at $5.8m, with Bob Dylan 6th at $4.3m.

Wicked's haul is the second day in a row it's had the second-biggest fifth "day" of its run.
It's in its fifth week and its Thursday total of $6.889m is second only to the $9.1 million that Frozen made on a similar day in 2013.

Wicked passed Frozen and passed $400m domestic on Thursday, reaching $404.7m and passing Frozen, Transformers 2, Jumanji, and the original Spider man to sit 45th all time.
With another full week of "vacation days" and then a long MLK weekend, this thing is going over $500m. Astonishing. If its Friday-Sunday matches what it's already done this week, Wicked should enter the top 35 by SUnday.

Moana 2 is almost as strong, hitting $376m on Thursday, putting it 58th all time.

An accomplishment that I am really not sure when the last time it's happened, although I have a guess took place this week.

A wide-release movie - Mufasa - made more in its second weekend than in its first.

Mufasa finished second overall at $37.1m narrowly behind Sonic's $38m.

But while Sonic's box office was down 37% (normal), Mufasa's was up 5%.
I'm sure there have been surprise movies that gained ground as they went on, but among blockbusters? A rarity. I thought it might have been Avatar in 2009, but it dropped a mere 2%.

Titanic however, went up from Week 1 to Week 2 back in 1997. It made $28m the first weekend and $35m the second, a 24% bump up. It opened in the exact same time frame as Mufasa - one week before Christmas. But hundreds of other movies have done that without being able to replicate this really impressive accomplishment.

A really bonzer weekend overall, with 6 movies making at least $11m.
Beyond Sonic and Mufasa, Nosferatu made $21.5m, WIcked made $19.45m, Moana 2 made $38m, and A Complete Unknown made $11.6m.

Wicked and Moana - big family flicks, both soared over last weekend. Wicked was up 37% while shedding 119 theaters, and Moana up 38% whiile shedding 190.

Sonic is up to $136m and Mufasa to $113m. Moana 2 is about to crest $400m ($394.6) and WIcked is way up there at $424m.

Wicked's tale of the tape just keeps getting momre impressive.
This was its 6th weekend and that $19.45m is the 8th biggest 6th weekend ever.
It's up to 35th all time domestic.
It's Friday $6.85m was the 6th largest 6th Friday ever. It's Saturday was the 12th largest 6th Saturday. And it's Sunday was the 6th largest 6th Sunday.

With 3 days left, that's 22 movies in 2024 that made $100m domestic. There were 24 movies that made $100m last year.

Gladiator 2 continues to make good money as the alternative to the family stuff. It banked $4.15m to reach $163m.

Our old pal Kraven made $1.7m for the weekend and is up to $21.3m. That's good for 3,717th all time, just $4,00 behind 2011's Mars Needs Moms.

Not all the numbers are in yet, but Mufasa is #1 on Monday with a $7.7m turn.
Sonic's numbers aren't in yet.
Wicked is third ($4.75m), Moana 2 4th($4.70m) and Nosferatu 5th ($4.39m).

Wicked continues its run as the mini-Titanic, ripping up the record books late into its run. The $4.751m it made on its 6th Monday is the third highest ever, trailing only Frozen in 2013 and Top Gun Maverick in 2022. It's up to $429m domestic, jumping Catching Fire and Captain Marvel to reach #33 all time. The top 30 lies ahead with Shrek 2 at $441m.

Moana 2 hits $400m almost exactly at $400,008,683. It is almost to $900m worldwide, which means $1bn is a cinch. It's up to 18th all-time global animated movies.
