Key notes from Buchanan’s thoughts on Brooks

  • #7 means we're almost ready for the season to start.

  • Dalton Brooks is the pride of Shiner, Texas. He's really good and has room to get better. He was third on the team in tackles last year with 62, but I can still think of some open-field tackles... If his tackling improves, he can play in the NFL for 10 years.

  • He's an exciting player. He had a great game vs. Missouri. He ran for 50 yards on a fake punt. He caught the fumble and took it to the 4-yard line. He had the only interception by an Aggie DB against South Carolina. He had four sacks. He had one against Arkansas when Taylen Green was like a rock in your shoe. They blitzed Brooks off the edge, and that took some angst off that game.

  • Brooks is a heck of a player. You could put him anywhere in the secondary and maybe even the offensive backfield, and he'll be good.

  • I think he's an NFL player. He can work on his hands a little bit, as he had some interceptions get away from him, even though he had the one vs. South Carolina. He's a playmaker on defense.

  • They are deep at safety, and Brooks is a big reason why. I'm a fan of Brooks.

  • As a safety, you expect him to play a role in everything on defense. He might tell you that he should've had a half dozen interceptions last year. The first part of that is being in the right spot, and he does that. The second part is having the athleticism to get there if you're not, and he has that. If he works on his hands a little bit and his tackling a little bit, he has All-American potential.

  • If all those interceptions that got away from him last year are reeled in this year, he'll be an All-American because he can do something with the ball when he gets it in his hands. He was a running back at Shiner. Look at his ball-carrying ability with that fake punt against Missouri.
