What's crazy is that after a super crowded March, Mario has pretty much a clear road ahead in April. It probably keeps IMAX theaters for several weekends.

$59M Friday. Five-day upped to $195M+ on Deadline. And they're probably still lowballing.

Life is pretty good if you're Chris Pratt.

Between all his franchises (Jurassic, Guardians, Avengers, Lego, and now Mario), I imagine he's climbing that list of highest grossing actors QUICK.

Jack Black is having a pretty nice run himself, too. Just in the past few years he's had Kung Fu Panda 3, the two Jumanjis, now this, with Borderlands and Kung Fu Panda 4 scheduled for 2024.

Yeah, I remember a bit of an uproar when Chris Pratt was first announced as Mario, cuz he's "controversial". Lol at that now.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

While Pratt has been dragged in the past for attending whatever controversial church he went to years ago, this particular fit of outrage was because he wasn't Italian. Justifiably so, since, as we all know, Italian plumbers who transition to raccoons and fight dragons aren't represented nearly enough as they should be by the Hollywood workforce.

These are the same people who lost their sh*t because Steven Spielberg didn't cast a Jewish actor to play his own mother. They got mad at a Jewish man - the greatest living filmmaker, at that - for coming to the conclusion that a non-Jewish woman (Michelle Williams) best embodied his *own* mother. It's just mind numbingly stupid.

Pratt is currently 7th in domestic box office totals. 8 of the top 10 are Marvel people, the only exceptions being Hanks and Cruise.

Sam Jackson is first because he mixes in 3 Star Wars movies, Jurassic Park, and 2 Incredibles.

Top 10 domestic looks like:

1. SLJ $5.718bn
2. RDJ $5.474bn
3. Scarlett Johansson $5.289bn
4. Tom Hanks $5.129bn
5. Tom Cruise $4.679bn
6. Zoe Saldana $4.678bn
7. Chris Pratt $4.386bn
8. Chris Hemsworth $4.302bn
9. Bradley Cooper $4.298bn
10. Chris Evans $4.089bn

Harrison Ford is 11th at $4.051bn, so presumably will pass Evans up this summer with Indiana Jones 5. Nobody else is above $4bn. Johnny Depp is 12th at $3.685bn.

He's roughly $300 million behind Saldana for 6th. Did her character die in Avatar 2? Because even if she makes even 1 more of those movies, you have to figure that's another $500 million for her easy. So Mario would have to make a ton to get him ahead of her. They're both in GOTG together so that's a push, but if they make another 2-3 Mario movies he could get pretty far up there.

I will have to go back and look at the list, but I'm surprised Vin Diesel isnt int he top 15 or so. With all the FFs and the last 2 Avengers, Saving Private Ryan, and the GOTG films.

Answering my own question, Vin Diesel is 17th at $3.457 million, between Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo.

Holland is the youngest person by leaps and bounds on the list. He has 15 movies and has grossed $3.493 billion. He's $48 million behind WIll Smith, who has 34 credits to his name.

Friday adjusted down to $55M, slightly down from the $59M estimates but still a massive day, and still on track to smash records.

Quote:

Illumination/Universal's Super Mario Bros Movie is still coursing for a $195.3M 5-day opening, which as we told you is second best ever after Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's Wednesday-Saturday haul of $200M. This is even after a $55M Friday, and still projected $137M 3-day. However, the bigger deal is that the movie is headed for a $368M Global start, making the Nintendo production the biggest animated opening of all-time, ahead of Frozen 2's $358M. Nancy has all the particulars as this must-see movie is minting $173M overseas. Worldwide, it's also the biggest opening for a movie based on a videogame after Warcraft's $210M. Stateside for a videogame, Super Mario Bros squashes Sonic the Hedgehog 2's 3-day of $72.1M.

More brags for Super Mario Bros:

Biggest global opening and 3-day domestic to date for 2023 outstripping Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($225.3M, $106.1M).

Biggest opening ever for Illumination, besting Minions' 3-day of $115.7M and Despicable Me 2's 5-day of $143M.

Second biggest opening ever for an animated film in U.S./Canada after Incredibles 2 ($182.6M)

Yeah I think $195M+ is still the conservative estimate for the 5 day. I think it breaks $200M. What's crazy is we were talking about hitting $150M just a few days ago.

I always suspected it would hit a billion but didn't see it coming out of the gate THIS strong. Crazy. And it hasn't even opened on Japan yet!

To me it's sad because the movie isn't even that bad. It's fun! IMO it did not deserve to become the all-time CBM flop that it will inevitably be known as.

Granted, the fact that we know that universe has been rendered irrelevant is a huge reason why, I would guess.

If that holds, that's an INCREASE from Friday's $55M. All the projections had it dropping Saturday by around $10M, so that would be insanity.

That would lock in $210M+ imo.
