Every time that vocal chant hits...

i have quite the opposite reaction. Besides Chalmet being a terrible Paul, the vocal Arabic noise is just filler that screams "hey, we can't figure out what sound goes here and we are afraid of uncomfortable silence because it makes the studio heads nervous, so we are going to put some canned Arabic chanting in here."

Visually, it all looks stunning but the whininess of Paul, poor casting in key roles and simplified dialogue that comes across as downright cringey really detract from this project.

Looks like another streaming movie for me; not worth the effort of the going to the theater.

If I can be impartial for a sec, this movie wouldn't move the needle for me at all as it looks like a run of the mill sci-fi joint, but it happens to be my favorite sci-fi story so I do pay close attention to how well (or not well as is the case) this adaptation is going.

I like that they gave you indirect glimpses of him riding, but you just know the actual scene is going to be MUCH more impressive

This would be really cool…

In the novel, Irulan is something of a historian, logging all the events of the story in excerpts that break up the book's chapters. Her role looks to be emphasized and expanded here, however, as we don't get much material outside of those excerpts. I have a theory that her narration might open "Part Two" from the imperial perspective, like Chani's narration opened "Part One" from the indigenous perspective. This would be a way to immediately introduce her and House Corrino while getting viewers up to speed on the events of the first film and quickly tied back into Paul's journey.

I've still only read the first book, but so far Denis has done well to faithfully adapt the material while clearly leaving his own prints on it. Some have complained a lot about truncating certain bits of lore, but imo that's just Star Wars brain rot engrained in certain brains. I thought the first one was good, but this one seems like it's going to be better. Let's hope so anyway.

I'm also someone who thinks Lynch's version actually wasn't bad too. He's never made a bad film and has never come close either. Sometimes he seems to try to get too close to the center of his, or our, consciousness to the film's detriment, but he's one of the few people alive who can pull it off. We need the aliens like him to create, or we lose something intangible but invaluable.

Frank Herbert was American.

It's Dune not Djune

Lol! Djune? Super cringey. Goes right along with the dialogue in the movies, the original and the farce of the recent one.

Frank Herbert cannot be translated to the big screen properly.

for sure I have to agree, the lynch version had its low points but it was a better representation overall of Dune than the CGI fremenporn decadent failed attempt of the new ones.

I just can't take the Lynch version seriously solely off the way he depicts the Harkonnens. Baron shouldn't look like some random guy from Cleveland.

I will say I'm not huge on the look they gave Austin Butler as Feyd. He looks like Deadpool from that awful Wolverine Origins movie.

For all of its faults, I feel the SyFy Dune mini-series came the closest of the three to portraying the Baron as depicted in the book. Ian McNeice's performance is one the few high points from that series.

Gonna go ahead and make a few pie-in-the-sky predictions right now...

- Dune: Part Two won't be the highest-grossing movie of 2023 (that will go to The Super Mario Bros. Movie), but it will be *the* defining movie of the year, settling somewhere around Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, in the top three or four, box office-wise.

- It only gets one week in IMAX before The Marvels takes over on November 10. But come Thanksgiving, Dune: Part Two will go *back* to IMAX theaters, kicking the underperforming The Marvels out, and will play again in IMAX until December 20, when Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits theaters.

- In fact, because this is the worst holiday blockbuster movie season in years, if not the worst this century, Dune: Part Two will play like gangbusters all December long... ultimately riding that momentum to a Best Picture WIN come March 2024.

I'm sorry, but I'm still living in a world where Oppenheimer wins best picture. If they are both as good as I hope they will be, Nolan will have the edge in the race IMHO. He has the "overdo" narrative that the olds love and then all the respect/love from the younger members. Dune will have the sci-fi bias. Sure it was broken last year but I doubt they go for it 2 years in a row.

But…how about it's the most watched Oscars in years with 2 popular films duking it out for the big awards?

I don't normally give a crap about Oscars and who wins or is nominated, but I'll say both Oppenheimer and Dune Part 2 look like those could be of that quality. Oppenheimer seems like the kind of movie that often wins Best Picture, but I wonder if Dune Part 2 could be like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in being a sort of "body of work" award? Not a body of work as in his entire filmography, but for this particular story.

I would love nothing more than a neck-and-neck, down-to-the-wire, Dune vs Oppenheimer Best Picture race. Throw in a little Killers of the Flower Moon and it could be an incredible Oscars.

Cillian Murphy will almost assuredly be at the top of the leaderboard for Best Actor here in a few weeks, so Oppenheimer will definitely have that going for it. And yeah, this could easily be the year/movie they finally reward Nolan as well. But if Dune is worthy, it'll have more overall momentum later in the year, heading into awards season, so who knows. Either way, it should be fun.

This is also a little inside baseball -- but Dune is WarnerBros. and Oppenheimer is Universal -- neither of which have a great track record of getting a film to a best picture win in the modern era. It also sets up Nolan going against his former studio home, which is interesting. The Killers of the Flower Moon is Apple/Paramount. Apple just got a best picture winner in CODA, but Paramount doesn't have the best track record either. None of this REALLY matters if the movies are good as far as a nomination for Best Picture, but getting a film the win requires a long haul strategy from the studio to run the gauntlet. I'd say, site unseen, The Killers of the Flower Moon is the actually the best bet of the three to getting the win just based on what studios have been capable of. /derail

Did a rewatch of Dune this weekend and it's still awesome. My main criticism remains that it's visually too dark. Watching on my ipad at home I can turn up the brightness to see better but in the theater there were too many scenes that were just hard to see what's going on. I really hope they can remedy that for the sequel. Really looking forward to part 2, it's running neck and neck with Oppenheimer for my most anticipated film of the year.

Something's going down tomorrow, just FYI, as the official site has been replying with a cryptic hourglass to a bunch of different accounts. It feels too soon for a new trailer but who knows. Something like this might be more accurate…
