Don't think it is the first. I believe that is where Luke was in TFA perhaps. I think it is just a Mecca of sorts... perhaps important because kyber crystals can be found there.

This is correct, though they didn't do a good job explaining this, or what Kyber crystals are, or why they are important to the Death Star. They blitzed through that pretty quickly.
Wait do we want them to explain these mysteries now? Remember Midichlorians?

No, but they never said why the empire wanted them. Just that they fueled the Death Star, which I'm pretty sure isn't even really totally accurate; surely they focus the beam of the cannons, right? Remember that if you've only seen the movies, I'm sure that the term Kyber crystal would be totally new to you, and I can't actually think of a time that crystals are mentioned at all. Just seems like something that would be confusing to most viewers that didn't have to be.

Out of all my problems with Star Wars, explaining the Force and how the Death Star worked didn't keep me up at night.

I'd bet $1k the reason they even mentioned the crystals were for episode 8. Kylo Ren has a boo boo light saber and he'll need to create a new one. Now the audience has some backstory on how that's done.

Basically, Disney sacrificed a lil plot simplification now, to help later.

I have to admit that the claim that they are on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan is pretty laughable given the Rogue One ending. Pretty bad excuse - try harder next time.
This is why it threw more for a loop. As many times as I have read the opening of ANH I have always interpreted it was "here is what has happened while you were away". (not a big book/EU guy)

Oh and I see that people have already started subtly ****ting on this movie. It will only be a matter of weeks before this is terrible and it has left a nasty scar on my beloved star wars.

The reason why you thought Saw Garrera was under developed is because he was already developed... in the Clone Wars tv show. He had his own arc that fully fleshed him out as a character. So the fact that he's the first EU character to make the big screen explains alot. I was satisfied with Whitaker's interpretation of him though, based on the show it's easy to that being where he ended up. From what it seems the Fanboys are liking this movie ALOT more at the cost of some critics.

If he was established in an earlier movie, sure, that would obviously be fair game. But from a cartoon that only a percentage of the audience has seen? I shouldn't have to do homework to understand a character better. Overall, it's no big deal, and I got the gist, I just hope this doesn't become a trend.

Could very well be right. I've been harping on the use of RO, TFA, and Rebels to help reinforce the idea that there are more than two Force-using factions in the galaxy, which is sort of along those same lines.

The motivations of a minor supporting character is not critical at all to the movie. So for something like this where your just curious about his motivations, I think it should take some "homework". You know well enough that they can't flesh out every character entirely. His motivations are not relevant to the plot other than to know that he's rebelling apart from the rebellion. Which they stated in the movie.

To me, the weakest link of the movie by far was Saw Gerrera. I don't know what the hell Forest Whitaker was attempting with that accent, but even had the performance been amazing, the character was basically a dead-end plot device more than anything. I wanted to know what made him tick or more about his little operation, and I get that they didn't have time for all that, but man, he was such a lame character that amounted to nothing.
I'm assuming the reshoots are responsible for neutering this character and scene. It was part of the overall change to make Jyn more sympathetic and less arrogant/unlikeable and set the tone for the rest of the movie. In the movie their interaction was basically showing her the hologram and her falling down crying over it. In the teaser they had "what if they break you....what will you become" implying a more complex/darker motivation.

I'm more interested in how they changed the saw Guerra scenes for the reshoots than the ending, unless the original ending had some crazy twists like they all escape.

I thought it was very good, but not blown away. It was a great story that dragged a bit trying to set everything up with characters that I never really cared about, but the payoff was amazing. The Vader scene was the best thing in Star Wars since the ending of Empire. This wasn't as fun as The Force Awakens and I didn't walk out of the theater with the giddiness that I had with TFA, but this may be one of those movies that I'll appreciate more later down the road. As of right now, I'll rank it 4th in the franchise.

I guess it's a matter of perspective; the POV of the movie is from the Rogue/Rebel side before they had plans to analyze.... do it was all just rumor / conjecture. Did the imperials ever talk about Kybur crystals use?

I think we intentionally aren't really meant to know.

I'm confused. They explicitly say kyber crystals powered Jedi lightsabers and that they are being used by the Empire to power the Death Star's weapon. And people don't think they explained the kybers?

Personally, that's not my issue. We're 8 movies into the Star Wars universe and this is the first time we've heard of it. Just seemed like a shallow plot device.

But I'm cool with it. Just wish they brought them into the fold earlier.

No need to get tetchy. I'm not raising alarms or screaming about injustices.

They just blitzed through it real fast.

I wasn't against him, but I feel the time they spent in his stronghold could have been used to greater effect than it was. They spent entirely too long on the interrogation of Bhodi...Especially the stupid tentacle thing.

I get it, they were trying to make him seem crazy, but still.

I'm just honestly confused that something like that would bother anyone. It wasn't really a "major plot point," it just explained the connection of Jyn's dad to the Death Star (now they could have maybe explicitly stated he was a kyber specialist, but they left the breadcrumbs with Jyn's necklace). They gave exactly the amount of information necessary needed about kybers: no more, no less.

Saw was definitely the weak point, and I agree with others who think he might have suffered by the reshaping of the film. There were a handful of moments through the film that seemed slightly out of place and I wondered if they would make more sense in the context of deleted/reworked scenes

Didn't know this thread existed till now. Saw the movie Thursday at 7 in IMAX 3D. Got the very front seats because of the terrible traffic between League City and Beltway 8. Not as packed as I thought though, I thought there would be long lines. Few people dressed up, wish there were more. Maybe I'll wear a jacket and pin a packet of Sudafed as a Rebel Officer.

Sitting in the front I had to have my eyes adjust so the beginning for me sucked. At least I had railing to rest my feet.

They did everything right with this movie. I think the reason why it did so well was the right amount of battles. This had way more battles than the Force Awakens and better battle scenes.

Grand Moff Tarkin made my day. The CGI was a little disturbing at first but worked real well the rest of the movie. I remember an article way back when, false rumor, George Lucas wanted to resurrect dead actors for movies like Alec Guinness. Disney has been getting better at this like the scene in Antman with CGI young Michael Douglas. HBO pulled that off with young Anthony Hopkins in Westworld and let's not forget Benjamin Button. The battle scene with Gold Leader and Red Leader was great. I thought they were CGI'd as well but I read that they used old unused film from A New Hope in the archives. When I get the Blu-ray, I'll have to pause that Princess Lea scene. I'm wondering if they just stitched her face from the old film. It looked really good. They couldn't have used Carrie Fischer's now raspy voice.

I noticed those scenes that didn't make the cut but were in the previews. I really like that they did that. I think more movies should do this because it seems like trailers now give off the plot easily. Already knew this would be a sacrifice type of film though, "go! go! I'll hold them off" "noooo", movie. "Fly you fools!" Makes you think there must be a ton of outtakes. Maybe even an alternate ending with Jen Orso running with the plans.

Love that they did well with the 70s hair styles. lol

Also glad they included R2 and 3PO because they're in every Star Wars movie!

For a How It Should Have Ended Youtube video, they should hire Russian Hackers to steal the plans.

As someone who doesn't play the games or watch the other shows, (like a majority of viewers) it was the first I heard of what should be a critical plot element. Like I said, it was just odd that we hadn't heard about it in any of the 7 films prior.

...you don't think the common mineral that fuels every light saber and the Death Star not to be a critical plot element? Look beyond R1 dude. If Kyber crystals are the only natural resource that can produce Jedi and Sith weaponry, how is that not critical? I guarantee it's going to come up again in future movies.
