I could see Lyle Lovett's LA County (also about murder) making an appearance on the soundtrack at some point.

I agree. The first season started off at a crime scene that was so dark it troubled the detectives and gave them an immediate PR issue. Only later did we learn virtually every character was severely flawed.

This season started off meh. Every character was introduced as flawed. There wasn't anything approaching the darkness of the first season, but more references to sex, corruption, and a grand conspiracy that appears to be unraveling because a key player was murdered.

I'll watch this season faithfully, but season two had the bar set so high by MM and WH that it will be tough to even get in that ballpark.

Was concerned about Farrel's thick Irish accent coming out but he was good enough to forget who you were watching.

That dude has worked out at my gym for years. He used to be homeless. So awesome to see him truly making it as of late.

Also, phenomenal summary, MW03.

I found it interesting that Kitsch's character was so confident that the Internal Affairs investigation would find in his favor as he was already negotiating terms of his reinstatement. When he popped the Viagra, that did it for me. I'm thinking he will be able to prove his impotence in a non-psychological way, which will get him off those BJ charges pretty easily.

Also, he was demanding to stay on the highway. He knows he is an adrenaline junkie and the bike is one of the ways he gets his fix. That is why he needs to be CHP on the bike, on the Pacific Coast Highway. That is also why he went for the night ride, he needed his fix.

Additionally, when Colin Farrel's character meets with Vince Vaughn back when his wife was raped, his arm patch was Los Angeles County. There will be some history with his character and where McAdams now works, same office.

My small prediction of one part of the show here:

Based on how the director said last season everything you needed was "in the first 3 episodes" I am going to predict one part of the corruption here...

Colin Farrell's "son" is the product from the rape of what I think to be the right hand man of Vaughn. The red headed guy that we saw pouring a drink at the bar in the flash back scene when Farrell approaches Vaughn for info about the rapist. Also we saw this red head guy in the present talking with Vaughn before his speech.

Reason maybe?..

I think Vaugh needed an "in" at this time with the police department and orchestrated the rape by one of his wise guys and thus prompting Farrell to approach Vaughn about information on the rapist, leading to Farrell becoming bad cop under Vaughn's thumb and "in" with the police department. Farrell's wife getting knocked up was just an oops.

Anyways, just my prediction based on the kid being a red head...

there is no way Colin Farrel would be on duty after what he did to the middle class family dad.

He didn't identify himself that we saw.

Not only that but he never said anything about who he was talking about...just kept telling the kid he should not bully anyone. Presumably the kid likely was bullying more than just his kid so it could have been any number of people.

I doubt the Conroy's live in Vinci, but if they do, then I think "corrupt city government" is your answer.

Otherwise it's

quote:
Velcoro: Hey I need a listing for the Conroys.
Dispatch: Hey, here's your listing for the Conroy residence at 123 Anystreet Place, Detective Volcoro.
Velcoro: Thanks.

(10 mins later)

911: 911, what's your emergency.
Ms. Conroy: This is Jane Conroy at 123 Anystreet Place. My husband Joe Conroy was just beat up by someone claiming to be a detective.

By the way, we all agree that Farrell killed the man that raped his wife and fathered his child right? He was never caught is what he told his lawyer(?) at the beginning, but we know he knew the identity from Vaughn.

From what I remember, the lawyer asks if his wife was pregnant at the time of the rape. Farrell answers that he thinks she was. So that would make the kid his, no?

I'm not sure whether they found the rapist and/or Farrell killed him or not. That part was intentionally ambiguous for the moment I think.

And isn't his wife still alive? The lawyer asks why he wants full custody and he says she just left for two months one time and it was just him and the boy. So is redhead's stepdad married to Farrell's wife, or do we think she is dead?

Lastly, just to revisit the BJ thing one last time, when the motorcycle cop walks out of his supervisor's office the dbag on the cell phone says "Please tell me it's true!" Does that not indicate he took the BJ, or is that just the rumor floating around the office? I mean, he didn't look like he was enjoying the one from his gf. I thought by the look on his face he was ashamed he cheated.

(I will definitely have to watch the first episode again before next week just to make sure I have everything straight!)

Not trying to be sarcastic or mean, but I tend to agree with all the previous analysis and think you really do need to watch it again.

Farrell is in denial as best he can be about the paternity of the kid, but the combination of his kid looking nothing at all like him along with the timing of his birth following the rape, I think its pretty obvious that we're supposed to infer that the kid is the rapist's, and that Farrell probably knows it as well, deep down, but that he really wanted to be a father and takes it seriously (a little too seriously, as we see later).

The lawyer asked him if they caught the rapist and he says 'No', and since that's a basic fact of the public record, we do know that's true. We do not know that he killed him, but he learned the name and stormed out of the bar looking like he was on a mission. We see elsewhere in the episode the lengths he will go to to protect his family. That guy Vaughn gave him is dead.

Now, the theory that someone else threw out about Vaughn's #2 being the real rapist and the rape being a ploy to lure Farrell into the fold is a reasonable sounding one, and I'll be looking to see if we get anymore clues pointing to the idea that that is the case.

My assumption is that she's alive and married to the dude that was at the school with the kid. Also, he was asking for expanded custody, not full custody (not really a major plot point I don't think).

I also assume the look on his face about the BJ was not really from shame of cheating, but more from the fact that he is apparently covering up his impotency. Maybe at this point he doesn't even enjoy sex or can't feel it like he used to.

j/k I was interrupted midway through the episode so I am using that as my excuse for the fuzziness. And it's a damn hard show to follow in the first place!

Yeah, I agree the guy Vaughn showed Farrell is dead and that Farrell killed him (although not specifically shown). I think that is what led Farrel to become a dirty cop because Vaughn knows he killed the guy and is able to use that info to make Farrell do what he wants.

I suppose the #2 could be the rapist. But I doubt that the rape and all that was orchestrated to get Farrell into his debt. That's just too complicated to pull off. I would be willing to believe that the #2 guy is the rapist and Vince Vaughn found out that it was a cop's wife he raped and then devised a plot to give Farrell the name of some random tweaker he knew in order to a.) throw the cop off the scent of his guy and b.) use it as an opportunity to have a cop be in his debt.

I can also see a scenario that Vaughn with his connections got Farrell the job as a detective in that city's police force.

Pretty good back-and-forth analysis. Really hoping some of the occult stuff they mention comes into play, but again, Pizzolatto says he took it all out...

There are some shows I can multitask on and some I can't. True Detective may be the most demanding of shows, where you really have to pay attention to every thing that happens very closely. Obvious, as we've already dissected most of the main conversations of the show.

I had to watch a few episodes of season 1 several times just to keep up - and I've always thought of myself as above average when It comes to following movies and TV shows. I'm usually the guy people come to to explain stuff they missed.

There are still things from season 1 I never figured out and just chalk it up to Pizzolatto throwing out red herrings.

I expect there will be some here as well. For example, I'm already betting we never learn what happened to the lady's missing sister. It's entirely possibly that was just a plot device to get Ani to talk to her estranged father and tell us all about her family background and mother who committed suicide.

Agreed. Though im not sold on it being #2 as the rapist, i could see it being true. In either case it is much easier to find out about something and use it to your advantage than it would be to orchestrate the whole thing.

As to your second part that is what i gathered as well. I don't see any reason why he would go from working LA County sheriffs to the city police unless Vaughn had wanted his guy in that office.

Subtlety, a lost art.
