Liked it, these character names are going to get very confusing to me.

We all seem to have drinking or pill problems. Bike cop has to take Viagra to get it up for that chick? That blows
I was confused at the end to all their jurisdiction. Colin is homicide for Vinci, but I didn't pick up where McAdams and bike cop come from.
I believe the bike cop is just highway patrol...I think he said CHP, so maybe thats the same as a State Trooper here?

Colin is city cop from "city" where victim is from. (jurisdiction because victim was from his city)

McAams is with LA County Sheriff dept. (jurisdiction because victim was found out in the county)

Bike cop is California Highway Patrol. (jurisdiction because ?? he found the body and has a smoking hot girlfriend who appears to be down for whatever in the sack which makes for good TV??)

Was that Viagra or a pain pll?

You sure are curious about the sex stuff. Two posts in a row!

I think it was Viagra. He took so long in the shower because it had to kick in. As for the other dude, I just thought he was premature, but would have to watch it again.

Agree 100%. And yeah, pretty sure it was butt sechs.

Felt lost for a lot of the show. Having a hard time figuring out who we are supposed to relate to or like. Strongly do not like the female lead. Highway patrol guy is just weird and serial killer like. Colin Ferrell is probably the most likable, but damn they laid the bad cop on thick with him.

And I keep waiting for Vince Vaughn to break out with a joke. It's really screwing me up. I'm kind of confused as to what it is VV does, exactly.

This first episode was kind of meh. But I am in no way expecting that for the whole season. Hard to replicate the dynamic from MM and WH.

He's in organized crime of some sorts.

Really think some expected way too much out of the first episode.

What did the highway patrol guy do to get in trouble? Was it because he went home with that blonde, or because he pulled her over and maybe arrested her ? And she had some rich important family ? I didn't really understand that
Kashchei

He got a BJ from the blonde in exchange for waiving the ticket. Because of that he is now suspended with pay from the force pending an investigation.

Why do you say that? I don't think they made it clear other than apparently she accused him of "solicitating" a bj to not arrest her.

yeah, I think he refused and still gave her a ticket, then her lawyer made accusation that the officer solicited the BJ. But they have to put him on leave because there is some other **** going on (I think they said Black Mountain or something) so CHP is being cautious.

Yeah the whole point was that he REFUSED the BJ and still gave her a ticket. Didn't understand the rest of that situation though.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.

In the end it was just a plot device to add to his anxiety issues and for him to find the body at the rest area.

I think the Blackmountain stuff relates back to his military service.

That's what I was thinking. Figured the scars were related too but he said that was from before.

going back to a previous post...I don't think the motorcycle cop's girlfriend is the missing Mexican girl.

also since the cop needs the little blue pill --- declining the solicitation was kind of automatic for him

From what I gathered, Vince Vaughn has made a ton of money in organized crime - including paying off and basically owning the city government of this little suburb of LA. He's using his connections with the city planners to get involved in the construction of the high speed rail line, make a pile of money, then retire and go straight with his wife.

Black Mountain = Blackwater? Kitsch is getting crap because of being with Black Mountain, but tells his boss "What we did over there we did for America" right?

I thought the first episode was good... You got to know a little bit about all the main characters... No real good "hook", but with the resumes of the cast and the first season of the show it can afford to do the slow burn, it doesn't need to hook people right away.

That always ends well....and its origin is more Michael Corleone. " just when I thought I was out. They pull me back in."

I thought it was a pretty good introduction, if not somewhat frenetic. Seemed like they were trying to cram lots of intro into that first episode, which is fine. Having all the cops be from different departments makes sense and will be a good source of potential conflict between all of them. It had a lot of the feel of season 1, while also doing a good job being its own thing. I'm going to try not to constantly compare the two, since they will be different and it will be difficult to match up. But it doesn't need to equal season 1 to be awesome TV.

Man, Farrell's character is pure hard edge. In one ep, we get power-houring whiskey, along with coke and weed, and with two beatings, the first done for pay from the local mobster he's indebted to, and now works with.

By the way, we all agree that Farrell killed the man that raped his wife and fathered his child right? He was never caught is what he told his lawyer(?) at the beginning, but we know he knew the identity from Vaughn.

McAdams has back to back cases in one day that tie into family members? More just how much intro on all of them they had to cram in I guess. A chance to get to know her whole circle quickly. Someone mentioned she's from LA County, but I'm pretty sure she said she was Ventura County there at the end. That ties in with Kitsch's character working the PCH up near Malibu, where he stopped the girl.

Kitsch has a dark war past, and seemingly, a dark childhood to go with it, and all the trauma has left him impotent I guess? That sucks. His lights-out drive was pretty freaky.

I enjoyed the sporadic shots of the victim sitting in the back of the car being driven up there.

I thought it was interesting (and no accident) that out of all the main characters, the career criminal is the one who is by far the most put together and has his life in order, and certainly not any of the cops.

Also, writing that made me realize I'd already forgotten all the characters names, so as much for me as anyone else:

Farrell: Ray Velcoro
McAdams: Ani Bezzerides
Kitsch: Paul Woodrugh
Vaughn: Frank Semyon

Didn't you ever watch CHiPs!?

So what we know and can reasonably infer from EP1

Ray Velcoro
Divorced. Alcohol and drug abuser. He has been raising a child that we are to suspect is the product of his ex-wife's raping. We don't know for sure because they had been trying, and they never got a paternity test. Velcoro seems to be a terrible father that genuinely loves the kid. At one time, Velcoro was probably a stand up cop. He took information from a local crime boss named Frank Semyon that helped him locate the man who raped his ex-wife. Now he's a local city detective and he's also on Semyon's payroll. Violence seems to come to him easily. Sweet mustache.

Ani Bezzerides
County detective with a crazy sister, weird guru father, and mother who killed herself. She seems like she's cold with men. Based on the wooden training dummy, the knives on her walls, the books on knife fighting, and the fact that she stored like 3 hidden knives on her body after the shower (belt buckle knife?!?) we can tell that this is a dangerous lady. She seems like the textbook "by-the-book" cop drama trope.

Paul Woodrugh
Former soldier and current state police. Covered in a scar that looks like road rash from a time "before the desert", which makes sense considering he's got a motorcycle problem. Clearly dealing with some kind of PTSD that's left him with some "performance" issues. Suicidal. In a scene with his commanding officer, he mentioned that he was being railroaded because of "Black Mountain" which has yet to be defined. Based on his comments that they were "doing it for America over there" or something to that effect, I'm betting Black Mountain is supposed to be the infamous military contractor Blackwater, which gained notoriety in 2004-2007 for some questionable killings in Fallujah and Baghdad. If he's a former "Black Mountain" mercenary, he's also a dangerous dude.

Frank Semyon
Former small time hood that now runs a casino outside Los Angelas in the small town of Vinci. Based on his reaction to the article, his treatment of the mayor, and his comments about missing city planner Casper, he's involved at the highest levels of city politics in corruption. He currently trying to run a scheme with Vinci city officials to defraud the government of 100s of millions of dollars through construction contracts for the proposed California High Speed Rail (remember the gasps among the illuminati in the room when he said that the government had guaranteed "overages"). Think Tony Soprano and the condominium construction contracts. Apparently, he needs The Opulent Russian to invest. When someone killed Casper, they took a bunch of Semyon's (bribery?) money.

The Drama
Semyon wants Velcoro to find the person who killed Casper so that he can get his money back. Unfortunately, he has to work the murder with a damaged and suicidal Woodrugh, and a dangerous and by-the-book Bezzerides.

Not sure why McAdams was called in but bike cop (Riggins) just happened to find the body.

I'll make a comparison to last season, I felt like the first season descended into darkness while this one took a deep plunge into darkness right off the bat.

there is no way Colin Farrel would be on duty after what he did to the middle class family dad.

Sidebar: If anyone has a passing interest in Blackwater, read this article from the New York Times. Here's the intro paragraph:

quote:
WASHINGTON Just weeks before Blackwater guards fatally shot 17 civilians at Baghdad's Nisour Square in 2007, the State Department began investigating the security contractor's operations in Iraq. But the inquiry was abandoned after Blackwater's top manager there issued a threat: "that he could kill" the government's chief investigator and "no one could or would do anything about it as we were in Iraq," according to department reports.
